Help identifying Siscia officina?
« on: September 26, 2008, 05:57:48 pm »
The symbol (or 2 symbols?  looks sort of like a sword and a miniature "I") just to the left of the "SIS" mintmark is eluding me.  Anybody seen something like this before?

Is this an officina symbol, or just a spacer like the star?

Thanks!

The "sword" is one of the ties for the wreath, and you can see its opposite number on the other side of the mintmark, just above and to the right of the star.  The "i" is actually a gamma,  :Greek_Gamma: , but the top is not very large.  So the mintmark is Gamma SIS starHelvetica's spreadsheets tell me this is RIC VII Siscia 161.

The star is more than just a spacer - it's one of the control marks used by the mint, that helps distinguish the different production runs.  The gamma is the mark used by officina number three.

Quite a decent coin, too!  And nicely photographed.
