I read in the Autumn BM magazine about a
replica of Pheidias' statue of
Zeus from Olympia on display in the museum. This sounded amazing, and very impressive! Then, halfway through the article was the vital information that the
replica is 50cm high. Slightly less amazing .. but as I was nearby today I went in for a look, and it is actually very nice, with the usual caveats about how much is actually known and how much is conjecture. There is some source material, including four coins from Elis showing the
head, and also some imaginative artwork displayed next to the model. Worth a look if you are there. You can really get the feeling of what it must have been like to see the original.
