Caracalla AE20 of Serdica - Demeter?
« on: January 09, 2007, 04:33:53 pm »
I've come up empty on a positive ID/listing for this bronze. The scan is poor, but the reverse figure is holding a long torch(?) in the left arm and the right arm is extended and holding a small figure (Nike?). Nothing similar in Lindgren, SGI, Righetti or the online sources. Any thoughts?

Caracalla
Serdica, Thrace
AE20
Obv: Bust right (AVKM-ANTW)
Rev: Demeter (?) standing left with long torch and holding Nike (?) in extended right arm (CEP-DWN)

Varbanov III (Bulg.), no. 121, very possibly (only reverse illustrated).  If so, it would be in Mushmov's 1926 monograph on Serdica, which Varbanov cites, as "VIII, n. 202".  Of course, I don't have that.  It's the right size.  Another Demeter listed but not illus. by Varbanov is only 14mm diameter.  I think no. 121 is it.

Thanks very much, Pat. I had found some coinage with Demeter seated & holding Nike, but nothing from Serdica.
