Need help identifying trachy
« on: June 14, 2023, 09:01:02 pm »
I recently picked up a lot of 30 unidentified trachys at auction, and find that I am in over my head trying to identify them. I'm hoping someone can help me with identification.

Here are the best shots I can get of the 1st one:

Thanks in advance,

Wayne

Welcome to forum, as you have done when posting coins for help in ID post them one at a time and its very helpful to post size and weight.

This appears to be a billion aspron trachy of Isaac II SBVC 2003. To make things more interesting/complicated very similar coins were minted called Bulgarian imitative coinage with different authors supporting and refuting the premise of who what and where the imitatives were struck. I would consider it a possibility that this is an imitative but the flan and strike seems well done and appears to be a formal emission of Isaac. A forum member here that participates a bit on this board has published and updates different finds and theories of this and other issues that I do not have the time or ability to march out,  but will provide a link.

above is a link to his hypothesis and review of data, I would encourage you as well to explore the rest of his web site and other resources here at the forum website for further info.
