Phasaelis and/or Phasael?
« on: April 05, 2023, 04:06:48 pm »
Hopefully, this question is posted in the correct location.

Are there coins of Aretas IV that are marked for his daughter Phasaelis AND others for his son Phasael?
Both are found online but they look identical.

Thank you.

Hi Paul
even the names are pretty similar, they are two distinct historical figures.
Phasael (male) was part of the Herodian dynasty (half of 1 century BCE). Elder brother of the Herod the great, his mother was a Nabataean princess, therefore he could have received this Nabataean name. The father was Antipater the Idumaean.
Phasa'el - Phasaelis - Phasael (female), she was a daughter of Nabataean King Arteas IV and former wife of Herod Antipas (his uncle was the Phasael male above!) and in 5/4 BCE small Nabataean bronzes were struck supposedly in Petra bearing a part or her entire name in Aramaic. I'll try to send a couple of pictures of these coins in my collection.
im pretty sure that until now no coins have been discoverd or attributed to the Herodian Phasael.

Here a couple of coins struck by Arteas IV with the name of her daughter. On right is possible to read the complete aramaic name from upper right to lower left, Pē Sādē Hē Lāmadh.

Some references (more recent) identify Phasael as Aretas' son. All the listings in the FORVM shop have been changed from daughter to son.

... Some references (more recent) identify Phasael as Aretas' son. ...
In the quite recent book by Rahel Barkay,  "Coinage of the Nabataeans", Jerusalem 2019, it is argued that Phasael was a daughter of Aretas IV: "... a bronze inscription that surfaced in the Jordanian antiquities market in 2017 (Fig. 8.10) clearly indicates that Phaṣael was a daughter of Aretas IV and Huldu." (page 49).
