Great collection of ancient coins! I’m a complete newbie with just one ancient coin at present. Love the Hadrian collection. I’m also thinking of specialising later on in the coins of a Roman emperor who I’ve always admired.

Thanks Roger, I’m relatively new as well. So far I have been acquiring coins without much of a theme, but after my next coin arrives I’m going to start on my twelve Caesars collection. Also I can’t wait to see your gallery grow, your first coin is already amazing!

Best Regards,

Justin

Hello, I recently acquired a Seleucid coin under Antiochus Grypos. I am very happy that I got this coin because it looks so beautiful in hand. Also I hope everyone is doing well.

Best Regards,

Justin

Thank you Tracy, I really like how Zeus (uranios) is portrayed on the coin.

Hello everyone, it's been quite a while since I posted new coins that I've acquired. I have been pretty busy with school but I just added some coins I got in the meantime and would like to highlight some.

Beautiful coin of Ares from Bruttium:

Coin from the Suessiones

Beautiful coin of Trajan which is especially interesting considering the earthquake which unfortunately hit Turkey.

I hope everyone is doing well!

I really like the Brettii AE24. I haven’t posted mine to my gallery yet, but I've just been reading about them, trying to understand various questions. Including: Whether to call the reverse Hera, Bellona, Athena. Which denomination to use, "Double Unit,” “AE Didrachm,” “Reduced Sextans,” “Double Litra” – or just “AE24.” And, most interesting, the possible dates.

I say the dating is most interesting since it's about the shifting alliances between the Brettii, Rome, and Carthage in the major wars of the 3rd century BCE. (I don’t have a strong opinion on which date is the correct date; for now, I’m just interested in understanding what the major references say and why.)

You’ve got the more conservative range, 282-203 BCE, which covers the Pyrrhic War and both Punic Wars. It’s favored by Harlan Berk and a few other dealers (at least sometimes). That’s what Barclay Head used (Historia Numorum, 1911: pp. 90-).

Numiswiki has links to online copies of some of the most regularly cited references on these types:
Scheu (NC, 1955 & 1961) and Pfeiler (JNG, 1964).
Scheu dated them to the First Punic War (264-241), Pfeiler to the Second (218-203). (Pfeiler is in German – I can manage, slowly – but I found it well worth the effort.)
I don't yet have Historia Numorum Italy (Rutter HN), but I’m especially interested to see where it lands on the dating, and whether it directly addresses Scheu and/or Pfeiler.
“Collect the collectors…” John W Adams’ advice to J Orosz (Asylum 38, 2: p51)

Thanks for all this information Curtis, I was not aware of the differing opinions on the date. I will definitely read more into this interesting subject.

I added these a week or two ago but I thought I would post about it.

This pseudo-autonomous Bi Tetradrachm of Phillip is very nice looking and has a very odd texture when held which was a plus.

I am always fascinated by Zeus Ammon on coins because the portraits are always very bold and nice looking!
