Gold, "O" mint, column and Republicans added
« on: September 30, 2016, 06:23:51 pm »
So I picked up this provincial of Nero today at a coin show that copies the DECVRSIO type.  I always wanted the Imperial version but could never find one I could afford.  Started researching it and came up with very little!  Apparently this provincial is very rare.  RPC cites 2 examples and the few I've seen online all have the same countermark.  They are also all in the same condition.  Can someone help me out with the legends?  None of the resources I've checked list it.

Better in hand!

Thanks!

This one is proving more difficult then I thought!  Anyone have RPC to give me the inscriptions?

With the exchange rate at the moment I'm finding it hard to justify buying coins, but this little gem (OK maybe not a gem  ;)) caught my eye. It was cheap enough and quite scarce.  I've never been able to find one at shows and I think it must be scarcer than listed.

Vespasian denarius with Cista Mystica reverse.  Minted in Rome most probably for eastern circulation.  It's very much in keeping with the larger Cistophoric tetradrachms previously minted for the east.  Reminds me of Antony's cistophorii and those of the questors.

This is one of those odd types Vespasian minted which on the surface has no good explanation other than it being a restoration type, in this case copying a quinarius struck by Augustus.

Nice find Jay!

Thanks David, I had forgotten about the quinarii with the same reverse!  Blinded I guess by those nice big silver Tetradrachms! 8)

Excellent additions Jay!

Yes, the first coin is Ephesus, BY mint mark COS II issue, fairly rare.

Thanks David!  The Ephesian has a golden toning that's hard to capture in a photo.  The laurel branch Divus has been on my list for a long time too. It's worn but all there.  It'll do for now!  :D
