Title: Round 13 - Snegovik before and after
Post by: Snegovik on November 15, 2010, 09:03:24 am
Got them on Friday. Assessment and forecast:
1. Very worn. Too thick for LRB, maybe Seleucid. Will not show a lot of detail.
2. Islamic. May clean OK.
3. GLORIA EXERCITVS. May clean OK.
4. No detail seen at all. Judging by the flan only, maybe Ptolemaic. Prognosis pessima.
5. Potin tetradrachm. May clean very nicely. I am worried about possible corrosion under the huge piece of malachite on the obverse.

Yeah, that chunk on #5 will be a bear! Much luck!

Progress report:
1. Most probably, Antiochos IV SNGIs 113. Obverse: miserable remains of the radiated head. Rev: no legible inscription, but the standing figure is there.
2. Star of David and Arabic inscription. I know nothing about these.
3. Officina   :Greek_Gamma:.
4. Really Ptolemaic. Thunderbolt and eagle's tights showed up.
5. Bronze disease under the former encrustation.

Attribution:
1. Aretas III AE 16 Damascus mint. Meshorer Nabataean 1 or 1a - the difference is off the flan. 84 - 71 B.C.
2. Muhammad I (Al-Nasir Nasir Al-Din). Second reign. Fils, Halab mint, year 701. Ref: Zeno 88220
3. Constantine I AE3. CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG, rosette-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right / GLORIA EXERCITVS, Two helmeted soldiers standing facing one another, with spears and shields & standards between, SMANG in ex. Antioch mint, RIC VII 86,G
4. Ptolemaic AE 20, joint reign of Ptolemy VI and VIII, after 169 BC. Two eagles with closed wings on thunderbolt, double cornucopiae to the left. Svoronos 1426, Pl. 48, 14.
5. Potin tetradrachm of Alexandria, Maximian, year 4, Nike left, Emmet 4148.
Comments:
1. I was close in my initial assessment, but turned out to be more interesting.
2. Totally not my field. I did my best to attribute.
3. Attribution was obvious from from the very beginning, except for the mint.
4. Did much better than expected.
5. Spent most of the time on this one, fighting bronze disease. Currently in remission.

I can post separate pics of each coin upon request to show more detail.

If the coins are on a white piece of paper, you might want to photoshop your pic.  The paper looks yellow-orange.  If the paper is white the coin color will be off too.

Pictures updated. I made the background as close to white as I could. The color is more realistic now.

I'm impressed!  How did you go about cleaning #4?  I bought a lot of 10 of those and am making slow progress!
