My Judaean Collection Gallery
« on: September 09, 2006, 09:36:39 pm »
I just uploaded images of my Judean coins into the Gallery.  I need to finish editing the file descriptions to indicate the attribution, but until I finish, if you click on an image the filename equals the Hendin attribution.

I hope you enjoy the coins.

They can be viewed at:  https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=1198

Sincerely,

Craig

Gorgeous coins; you could make the images more useful by adding the descriptions, Hendin numbers, etc.

I just finished uploading images of my newest purchases, made at the Bay State Coin Show a few weeks ago.

The coins added are:  H488, H489, H491, H502, H639, and H640

I need to work on the descriptions after the new year...weights, diameters, descriptions of the elements, etc...

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=1198

Enjoy.

Craig,
You have a very discriminating eye.  Many of the coins you have in your collection generally come in fine to poor condition and yet you have managed to be patient and find those rare examples that are in higher grades.  They show off very well and you are a good example of how perservance and looking around allows one to build a fine collections.

Very nice and eye appealing coins. I've just wanted to state that some of them (mainly those coming probably from Waddell's sales), seems to me as being heavily processed by "tooling". If this does not bother you, than keep going...
Most of the coins, however, are very nice and seem to be cleaned by "kosher" instruments.

Added one new coin....a not-half-bad prutah of Herod I, Hendin 499 variety, just purchased from Herakles.

It's been a while since I picked up any new additions for my Judean collection, but last weekend I was in Boston for the Bay State show and managed to pick up a few pieces....a decent Herod Philip (H532) and a few variants of Pontius Pilate (h649 and 650).....mainly engraving errors where various elements are retrograde or even upside down.

I must say that the number of ancients dealers was a bit thinner that past years....CNG and Herakles were noticably absent.  But it allowed me to "spread the wealth" a bit more.

I just picked up a somewhat scarcer prutah of Herod I off of ebay....a Hendin-493.  An image has been added to the gallery (link below).

The owner originally bought is several years ago from Wayne Sayles, and the original flip from that purchase was included with the coin.

What beautiful coins!

One of my areas of historical interest is ancient Palestine, and someday I would like to collect coins from that region.

Your collection is quite excellent and a gives a good idea just how remarkable the coins from that area are.

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I have added a few coins to the gallery in the last few weeks, including the two most recent that arrived just yesterday....a quarter denomination of Herod Antipas (Hendin-511) and an AE18 of Herod Philip (Hendin 542).

Enjoy.

Not at this point.  While I have a handful of earlier types, I don't really concentrate on them.  (But since you mentioned it, perhaps I'll try to get around to shooting them and posing them to the gallery at some point.)

My main interest right now is Biblical coins, focussing on the Herodian and Procurator pieces, up through the end of the first century AD.  I may move into the various "rebellion" coins at some point, as I own a few odds and ends of those too.

I also have a small collection of the Emperors from this same period which can be viewed at:

It's been about five months since I posted to this folder, but I've added a few coins to several of my galleries in this time, especially the Byzantine anonymous folles gallery, and one or two in the Roman Emperors gallery.

For my Judaean collection, I just received my latest addition, a rather scarce prutah of Herod I, designated as Hendin-492.  I just uploaded its image to my Judaean gallery

All three of my galleries can be found here:   https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/index.php?cat=10623

This coin leaves me needing only one Hendin variety of Herod I, the very rare H-497.  Meshorer mentioned that there were approximately five examples identified when he wrote AJC back in 1982.  I assume several others have surfaced since then, althoutgh MCP only has images listed for two specimens.  Does anyone have a better feel for the current rarity of the H-497 lepton??

I can't help with 497, as I don't remember seeing one on sale anywhere, and TJC says nothing about the number of known specimens.

I'm still looking for an 'orthodox' 492, as mine has no trace of a cross either within or without the diadem. Hendin confirmed it as 492, and I'm not arguing! It's not in TJC. 15mm, 1.27g.

There seems to be some "confusion" regarding what truly constitutes a 492 variety, as your specific coin is pictured on the Menorahcoinproject.com (MCP) website as a 493 (last row of the Obv. #1 coins).

Your coin is certainly stuck well enough and the surfaces clean enough to show the cross/chi, if it was actually there.

I passed on several supposed 492s before buying this one, as many turned out to be either 493 or 494 varieties.  The only way I could feel completely confident was with a coin that clearly showed the cross/chi visible, below the diadem.
