Ave!
Copper
alloy; 48mm/34.3gm ca. 100-175 AD
Shaun ID'd this
fibula for me many years ago but I thought I'd share it one more. Sadly, I have lost the reference given.
Unlike many
brooches this one has a multiplicity of individual parts and pieces; 13 by my count.
1) The bow appears to have been
cast as one piece.
2) The
spring cover
3 The
spring and pin
4) The bird adornment
5) The terminal finial
6) The two rivet adornments to either
side of the
spring cover
7) Six rivet pins; 3 to attach the bird, one each to attach the two rivet adornments, and finally one more to attach the terminal finial.
This
had to have been labor intensive, in nothing else.
Best to all,
Kevin
