Carinus coin - can't find this variant anywhere
« on: June 19, 2017, 08:15:37 pm »
Hello. Just registered to seek help with You guys.

I have this Carinus antoninian.

Obverse is: M AVR CARINVS NOB C
Reverse: PRINCIPI IVVENTVT, emperor standing, holding standard and spear upright
Mintmark: VXXI

This coin seemed fairly common for me at 1st, but I can't find, like anywhere, this particular set of inscriptions + mintmark. Is this some kind of unlisted variant? Does it automatically mean it's very rare? (I love thinking I may have something rare in my hands :P).

Thx in advance for Your help.

M AVR CARINVS NOB C
PRINCIPI IVVENTVTI

There are T and Q versions so this could be a "new" VXXI...

I have several such "new versions" coins...  does not mean it is valuable....

Apparently there were three such coins in the Venera Hoard, nos. 338-340 (p. 161 and pl. 7) in the hoard report by Gricourt.

Hi the reverse is principi ivventvt ( not principi ivventvti ), it's quite rare. As Curtis mentioned 3 specimen in La Venera, note the dots between the letters on the obverse.

In my collection a specimen from the 6th officina with dots and from the 5th without dots.
These coins belong to the first Ticinum emission  October 282.

Unfortunately I do not have these volumes of the lVH.
