Elagabalus Beryton Phoenicia
« on: January 22, 2012, 12:03:05 am »
Size is 26mm, unknown weight.

OBV: IMP CAES M AVR ANTONINVS AVG, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right from behind
REV: COL IVL AVG FEL, Soldier advancing left, grasping arm of captive, BER in exergue

I have found similar examples described as Poseidon striding right, holding trident with his left arm while he is grasping the arm of the nymph Beröe - BMC Phoenicia pg. 80, 183; Lindgren & Kovacs 2268

But I am unsure what exactly is on this reverse and am finding nothing similar. Soldier with captive soldier? Carrying something?

Any help is appreciated.

This is Aeneas carrying his father and taking his son by the hand.
Cf. SAWAYA Ziad, Histoire de Bérytos et d'Héliopolis d'après leurs monnaies, Institut Français du Proche-Orient, BAH 185 (2009) p.71 1888-1900. Your coin is reverse die n°754 (illustrated p.334).

Not sure how you found the info, seems like an obscure reference. I tried everything I could find and came up with nothing.

Thank you very much for your efforts and the info.

I found the info in the latest catalog of Berytus and Heliopolis coinage. You can find it in University libraries, and you can even download an electronic version (pdf) of this book for € 9.99. The picture I attached comes from this .pdf.

Yes I saw that I could download it after it was identified on here. Looks like mine is also a reverse die match to the one from the book.

I am assuming it isn't a very common coin.

I wonder if it might by a cast, I don't like the fields and what I can see from the edge. The pictures are very small, though, and it could just be overcleaned.

I'll take a good look when it's in hand. I know it has some corrosion and the pictures are bad. Hopefully it's OK.

Pretty cool coin as I just finished reading the Aeneid by Virgil.  Aeneas fleeing the burning Troy (as instructed by the gods) carrying his father on his shoulder, son in hand, off to found the mighty Roman Empire.
