SISCIA PROBI AVG unlisted?
« on: July 05, 2007, 09:41:48 am »
Hello everyone,

Here is a photo of one SISCIA PROBI AVG antonininanus, which is apparently unpublished in RIC.

Obv: IMP C PROBVS P F AVG
Rev: SISCIA PROBI AVG --//XXIQ

Obverse inscription is different than usual IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG

Could anyone help with its identification.

Nice coin!  Could someone explain the reverse as well?

although there is RIC 764, 765 and 766 none of the three has the proper obverse legend

I can't find an example in Alfoldi.

I'm wondering: Can we be sure that the reverse image and letters have not been artificially strengthened? The letters especially.

Yesterday I was going to mention something along the lines of what Rupert said. The reverse looks really odd to me.

Indeed, one has to wonder whether the reverse might be entirely remade from another common type, which would explain the new variety!

While on first look, I felt the reverse style was a bit off, after looking at the coins Curtis has posted I'm more inclined to agree with him that the reverse could be entirely false. Yesterday when I saw it, the coin seemed off, but now the style is completely wrong, and I'd have to say almost impossible.

It appears to me that the "IAP" in Siscis Probi might be tooled...they seem off from the typical lettering seen on the inscriptions.  They appear more like block letters...just a thought.

Consider for example the closed A's in the rev. legend of the doubtful coin, contrasted to the H-like form of the A's on the obv. of the same coin (untooled) and on both sides of the other two coins!

Thank you for your help.

Indeed, RIC and Alfoldy does not quote obverse legend
IMP C PROBVS P F AVG, for SISCIA PROBI AVG type.

The more curious is the style of the reverse, which is different from the all specimens known to me. This rises serious doubts in the originality of this specimen, as pointed out by Curtis Clay, Rupert and Doug.
