Unpublished Era Date 74

I bought what i thought would be my second coin minted in Arados from era date 76 (184-183 B.C). With attractive sand patina, clear details and well centred strike, i was able to identify the monogram and era date quite easily. This new coin prompted me to revisit the older coin i have numbered DS, this coin actually turns out to be unpublished and can now be dated to year 74 (186-185 B.C). I have attached images of both coins with their respective era dates highlighted in red.

AR era date 76

1. D3-R3, New York, ANS 1944 100 70566 Newell. 3,39 g, 14,5 mm, 12 h. (Duyrat 1771).

2. D3-R3, Stockholm, Martin Rowe collection, no.NP 3,59 g, 16,7 mm, 12 h.

Due to increases in commercial trading the Aradians produced both bronze and silver coins for the market place.

This is a rare bronze dating from 380-350 B.C.

Final attribution;

Phoenicia, Arados 380-350 B.C

AE 13.39mm (Thickness 2.31mm), weight 2.10g, die axis = 4h (120 degrees).

Reverse: Galley right, below two lines of waves, figurehead on prow, standard and curved ornament on poop.

Great coin Martin!!!  +++ ;D +++

I like the style of the portrait, the Phonicians were actually more flattering than engravers closer to the chubby cheeked emperors home base!!

Martin,  The link is a little confusing because you have Weber listed as no.2 but your coin with a number 2 in the photo that shows three examples.

Either way, nice coin.

This is a very informative thread!

Today I was examining some coins from old mixed lots which had not received proper attention or attribution.

I've tried but cannot understand the date of this bronze.  From page three of this thread I see that the obverse figures are thought to be Zeus and Astarte, not Zeus and Hera or Poseidon and Amphitrite as cited in various other places.

I'd appreciate help with the date, and any corrections if necessary.

PHOENICIA, Arados
c. 137-126 BCE
AE 16, 4.0 gm
Obv:  jugate heads of Zeus and Astarte right
Rev:  prow of ship left, with figurehead of Athena; above, Phoenician aleph and nun (right to left); below, date
Ref:  (unconfirmed) BMC 346; Sear Greek 6004; Rouvier 338

Zeus would be my preferred choice instead of Poseidon, the latter was usual depicted sitting on the prow of Aradian coins. We know that Astarte was also popular in the region with many temples being built in worship of the goddess. The Phoenicians believed that Zeus became enchanted by Astarte´s beauty, thus changing his form into that of a bull and carrying the goddess to Crete.

Your coin is era date 130 or 130/129 B.C.

Duyrat 2005 No.4263-4290; BMC Phoenicia No.295-296; HGC 10 No.90.

Nice clear details on your coin TIF. +++

Veiled bust of Astarte-Europa with Humped bull galloping.

Unusual combination of Greek and Phoenician letters with monogram below, the engraver sure made good use of the flan space.

Yet again my intuition pays dividend.

Let not the condition of this coin detract from it´s rarity. This is only the second coin to my knowledge struck in year 45 (215-214 B.C) with Phoenician letters mem & ayin on either side of AP in top field. Duyrat describes this series as follows.

SÉRIE 3

Au droit : tête de Tyché à droite. Grènetis.
Au revers : proue à volute à gauche. Date en phénicien à l’exergue, d et lettres phéniciennes dans le champ en haut. Grènetis.

An 45 (215/4) ‘, M

1. 1643   D1-R1, Paris, BNF, H.SeyrigY28883,5.7,42g,19,0mm, 12 h.

2.            D?-R5, Stockholm, collection Martin Rowe, No.PF, 1 h.

Nice clear Phoenician letters on that rare bronze!  That makes it a double rarity.  It is so often a frustration that rare coins seem so often to lack some essential letter or detail necessary for full attribution.

Blundered Mintmark

The following coins of Arados were struck between 115-113 B.C (era date 145-146) and belong to série 7, 8 & 10. For those of you acquainted with the Phoenician alphabet and in particularly that of Arados, the letters highlighted in the image below will appear extremely unusual (No.1-4).  Coins struck two years prior and after show no signs of irregularities, as a reference i have added two samples of these coins to the image below (No.5-6) [1].  If we begin with the highlighted letters on coins 1 to 4, at first glance they seem to resemble beth & nun but mirror imaged. I suppose one could possibly categorise these letters has being blundered, but perhaps there is a more logical explanation for this oddity [2]. After checking reference books and the coins in my collection for similar formed letters, no coins struck before or after the aforementioned dates were found. I then began to think along the lines of travelling engraver, someone specifically brought in to produce dies for the three series mentioned above [3]. This idea prompted me to look further afield and so i started comparing the Sidonian and Tyrian alphabets.

Highlighted letter right, nun ?
After many hours of studying the numerous varieties of lettering, i found one version of the Sidonian letter nun which was almost identical but written with the usual rotation. The second was the Tyrian letter sadhe, also extremely similar with a rotation closely matching that of coins 1-4.

Highlighted letter left, beth [4] ?

Towards the end of G.Hills introduction to BMC Phoenicia are the alphabets of all the major Phoenician cities, listed under the city of Tyre is a mirror imaged letter resh [5].

On page 69 of Duyrat 2005 (Arados Hellénistique), the author of the book understandably questioned both of these disputed letters but could not decipher their meaning [6].

Series 7,8 & 10 in Duyrat 2005 are numbered as follows;

série 7 - No.2447-2455 / série 8 - No.2542-2543 / série 10 - No.4383-4386.

In my opinion the chances of blundered lettering occurring on all three series over a period of two years is highly unlikely, unless it was intentional and included as part of a makers/engravers mark. If the engraver originated from Tyre then the letters could feasibly be mem, yodh followed by sadhe & resh.

I feel these coins will inevitably remain a mystery but hopefully in the not too distant future, i will have the opportunity to study the BNF coins in hand at the Paris Museum.

For the purposes of attribution, i have opted for the following combination of letters, mem, yodh, taw & sadhe. I made this decision purely on gut feeling and for want of a better solution.

[1]  No other issues spanning the Persian or Hellenistic period of Arados have similar letters on them.
[2]  If the letters were blundered, why didn´t the city leaders stop the production of coins after era date 145 coins were issued ?
[3]  Possibly someone from the Aradian dependences or elsewhere in Phoenicia.
[4]  We can almost certainly discount a blundered or mirror imaged beth, below the era date on coin 3 is a perfectly formed letter beth in combination with the disputed letter.
[5]  I feel this option needs to be overlooked, see tail of disputed letter on coins 1-4.
[6]  The letters reference in Duyrat 2005; M, Y, N?, S[ts]? or mem, yodh, nun & sadhe.

Listed below are the 10 known samples of série 7 with disputed letters.

Arados 115-113 B.C (145/146), dans le champ droit : B ; à l’exergue : M, Y, T ?, TS ?
