Hostilian antoninianus
« on: February 22, 2009, 03:08:25 pm »
This Hostilian antoninianus is on sale on Ebay (from a seller not on the fakesellers list).

I would not have any doubt on this coin, but recently I have come across this Herennius Etruscus antoninianus (from the same seller) which I suspect it could be a fake on this thread:

Please compare the two coins. They look very similar in style...... ???

B-E,

For what it's worth, the first coin (being sold on eBay) is from a seller whose reputation is above reproach as a seller on eBay. Over 10000 positive feedbacks in the past year and 46000+ since 1999 (including a few from me) says it best.

Bid with confidence :-)

Regards,
Mark Z.

I don't want to disparage the seller but 100% positive ebay feedback means nothing at all.
There are certain high-volume sellers on ebay that, while I wouldn't call them dishonest,
I wouldn't trust to spot any but the most obvious fakes.

Thank you for your comments.  :)

I have no reasons to doubt that the seller is in good faith. In fact I am not sure at all we are looking at two fakes.  If these were fakes they are very high quality fakes indeed  :P

Of course the style should be similar for coins of the same period. But these coins look like they have been made by the same hand!

See the folds of the neck, the noses, the eyes.....

The "overall look" is also very similar. Very high grade, no signs of corrosion, no encrustations....

I know that all these are not enough elements to condemn them, but these coins make me feel unconfortable..... ???

They should look somewhat similar.  They are both Roman coins from the same time period and same mint.  They look genuine to me.

Generaly speaking, if you feel uncomfortable, don't bid, don't buy, you would own a coin you will never be 100 % sure about.

FWIW, I find these two coins very nice and think they are OK

This seller did already sell fakes.
I emailed him and sent him scans of identical fakes (a fake Antoninus Pius denarius from Bulgaria with priestly implements on the reverse, even published in Prokopovs book ) but he didnĀ“t respond and sold the coin.
So much for confidence :(

I have never had anything but good items from this seller.
In any case, these coins appear from the photos to be quite legitimate and I would have no doubts about them.

Well, at least for the Herennius Etruscus ant, there is little doubt it is a modern fake. Please take a look at this discussion:
