Claudius II Gothicus Portrait OTD...
« on: November 19, 2006, 09:14:15 pm »
I know this is a common specimen and  that most of the detail is not sharp, but the portrait stood out to me.  It is crisp and was the best among the hundreds of Claudius coins I looked through.  Take a look... There were other coins with sharp detail, but this one had depth as well.

Claudius II "Gothicus"
AE Antoninianus

Attribution: RIC 149, Mediolanum,
2nd officina, 2e-3e emission
Date: AD 269
Obverse: IMP CLAVDIVS PF AVG, radiate and draped bust r.,
Reverse: FIDES MILIT, Fides stg. l. holding two legionary ensigns, S in exergue
Size: 19mm - "thin layer of silvering all over the coin"
Weight: 3.4 grams

Thanks for the comment Lars...the coin is nothing earth-shattering, but just a nice portrait.

Given the bad reputation for quality often given to the coinage of Gothicus has this does to show that some coins were well engrave and well struck. Very nice.
