Identification Links
« on: October 29, 2006, 04:15:35 am »
FORVM members may already be familiar with the non-commercial online references below, but I thought it would be helpful espeically to new members seeking IDs to have a consolidated list in this section? I could not find such a list anywhere on forum. Does anyone else think this is a good idea? If so, can I suggest this post be stickied and new sites added when requested? I am sure I have missed some, so please feel free to add them.

may I also suggest the Forum Members' galleries?  They are generally well organized, well photographed and well documented.

is also helpful, and even better when you try other languages.

I tried first "dog" then "hound", "hund", "chien" and got many
different results. Using google interpreter helps a lot.

I find this very useful:

http://munzeo.com/

Any past auction come up.  Now before you say not auctions, help identifying, it is quite easy to need a new database of coin photos to look through once you know the emperor and type of coin.   This is very helpful in that respect and yes you do see the going cost of the coin.

Two databases to identify listed and unlisted late roman coins.

First, nummus-bible-database including a search engine and RIC references, that lists late roman coinage from AD313 to AD476. Currently more than 18800 LRC listed. Note that you can contribute to improve it with your own collection.

Then, siliques.fr, a siliquae database including a search engine for late silver coinage from AD337 to AD476. Currently 1285 sliquae listed in.

Once again, for those who like Late Roman Coins, the Guillaume's (Dardanvs) Valentinian site is not really an identification site, but information an pictures included in allow to identify most of this emperor coinage.

For Parthian coin collectors it may be useful to know that a Sellwood catalog based identification of silver drachm is available in two forms.

Either you can use a web page for it: https://mrcollector.eu/parthia/

Or if you have an Android mobile phone, download the free app from Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.mrcollector.parthiandrachm If link doesn't work search for the name: Parthian Drachm

Tamas

I plan to replace this thread with a new one and want to start it with a comprehensive, categorized, and organized first post.  I need everyone's help.  Please post your personal list of attribution links or your recommended links for others here.  Hopefully, I will then find a volunteer to categorize and organize all the links for a great first post for a new "Identification Links" thread.  Thanks for your help.

While not specific to a type or series,  I use acient coin search all the time and it helps attribute the majority of coins I look for.
