ID help, please, for Black Sea Issue...?
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:24:25 pm »
Ave!

I just really love to find a new coin that I can't ID, don't you? Below is a new one for me... Black Sea Panti issue, perhaps? The star seems right for this issue, but what do I know...

Obv/ Lion(?) charging r., star above
Rx/ BAE monogram.

I'll leave the ID for this one for our resident experts!

Best,

Kevin

Kevin,

You have a coin of Polemo I. Circa 15/14-8/7 BC.

The monogram on the reverse is found on a gold stater and numerous AE issues. The generally accepted expansion of the monogram is BASILEWS POLEMO.

Ave Barry!

Excellent, my friend! Is this a Panti issue, or what? Can you be just a bit more specific?  ::)

Best,

K

It's from the Kingdom of the Bosporus.  Probably minted in Panticapaeum, but possibly one of the other mints/cities in the Kingdom.  MacDonald doesn't really say if they were minted only in Panticapaeum or also Phanagoria, Gorgippia, etc.

Nice coin.

That's a lovely coin. The lion/star must be a stylistic derivative of the lion/star designs of Miletus, no? The standard Milesian reverse for at least 400 years is a standing lion with head turned back, looking at a star/sun. (The difference here is that the lion is running and facing forward.) Panticapaeum was founded as a Milesian colony around 600BC.

Does anyone happen to know of other lion/star coins?
