ID Hungarian Denar
« on: August 13, 2022, 06:26:19 am »
Hi friends,

I need your help in identifying this Hungarian denar. Low grade silver (billon?), 21 mm...

Thank you,

H.

Underneath I have put obverse and reverse together.
I have searched on the details: the Slovak style cross, the mintmark letters, the coat of arms with Arpad stripes (?) right below and a heart shield and the legends for as far as readable. Difficult to find indeed  :o.

Thank you, Jan. And excuse my clumsiness, I am still learning. Is it realy difficult or you were just ironic?  :)

No Horatiu C, I mean it! (And I think to have read here somewhere, the use of irony on our Forum is discouraged  :)).
If a heart shield in the coat of arms is an illusion, then the heraldry could plead for Zsigismond (stripes, eagle, eagle, stripes). But than again I cannot find Szigismond coins with a Slovak style cross.

As the pictures are not very clear, some details with respect to the reverse:

- the shield seems clearly halved in two, horizontally; in the inferior half, the Arpadian stripes are pretty crisp. I cannot identify what is in the superior half... but, as already stated, the shield is halved and not quartered
- from the legend I can read m______REGIS

On the obverse, even if some letters are visible, I cann't make out anything. :(

Regards,

H.

Following your info and the lower half are stripes, then I wonder if the upper half can be a bird.
That would match the Hunyady heraldry: see below: obverse the cross and reverse the bird and stripes.
It is clean guessing and it may be so, we are not closer to finding the coin :'(.

Thank you, Jan!
You were right... I think I have found it, just look here:

https://hu.wikibooks.org/wiki/F%C3%A1jl:Hunyadi_J%C3%A1nos_ez%C3%BCst_p%C3%A9nzei.jpg

It is the number 2, the denarius! :-)

Question: is there any way I can get rid of the ugly cuprite spots? At least, I assume it is cuprite...

Congratulations Horatiu! So, not the bird, but a crown. Magnificent find! I wonder if the identification will allow you to find such a specimen on the www.
For the spots, I am not the right man you need. Here are better people to advise you.

Thank you, it was just your help and luck from my side. Besides Numista - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces51205.html - I did not found anything else.
I wish you a wonderful evening.
