Clarification Macrinus ?
« on: September 17, 2008, 08:10:11 pm »
This coin has had me pulling out a pile of references trying to nail down an accurate catalog number.

This coin is correctly shown in wildwinds. Legends do differ some what. Here is the link to the one shown.

This refers you to GIC as a 2913 variant. 2913 list Hygeia and Asklepios both on the reverse.
Sear points to Pick 449, 1758 Neither of these two numbers are even close to the section on Macrinus.

The only reference I don't have is Moushmov listed as 1294.

28 mm 11.2 g

Could some one clarify for me where I went wrong

As always thank you for your time

Will

Somebody at WCNC just got lazy with the reference; your coin is Pick 436, 1695, Macrinus laur. r., AYT K M OPEL SEVHR MAKRINOS / Hygieia r. with serpent, V K AGRIPPA NIKOPOLITWN PROS ISTRON. (For this type there is probably a good Varbanov reference as well, generally much more useful than Moushmov, but I don't own Varbanov in English.) The Pick reference you give is indeed a Macrinus / Hygieia - Asklepios; how yours counts as a "variant" is beyond me!  By the way, you can now access Pick's volume online = AMNG 1/1; see https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=46374.0

And thank you for the images for my records.  You will have noted that your obverse, one of the very finest of Macrinus, heads my webpage on the dies for  Macrinus and Diadumenian dies issued by Pontianus and Macrinus.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/ayiyoryitika/PontianusAgrippaDies.html , where the obverse is I and the reverse is 41.  Your Hygieia is much finer than mine.
If you're interested in Macrinus at Nicopolis, I suggest, though it is mine, that you study my page.  For related Severan studies, the home page is https://www.forumancientcoins.com/ayiyoryitika/

Thank you guys for the clarification and the additional information.

Pat

I will take a look this evening and read over your site. Macrinus is not in my normal focus but I found the Obverse style striking so I have been adding nice examples to my collection. Please use whatever pictures of him I post for your work. I believe I have another coin of him in my collection I am not sure on the provence but I will look and add it to this post if you wish.
