videos of ancient coins put up for auction - becoming the norm?
« on: September 18, 2023, 07:55:45 pm »
I have not been active in the hobby for a while, but recently checked out a link to an online ancient coin auction for an American auction house. I noticed that for many of the coins on offer, not only are there high definition photos of both sides of the coin, but there is also a video made of a person with purple rubber gloves carefully turning the coin around so as to make a good video of it, which is uploaded to Youtube. Is this videoing of coins becoming the norm or is it just one American auction house experimenting with the technique?

Seems like it's okay to name the firms in this context? [REMOVED BY ADMIN] and HJ Berk (the first?), maybe others. From my observations, I think Harlan J. Berk first started it some time by or before 2019 (when I first noticed it) -- possibly Aaron Berk's idea, always appears to be a bare-handed (but often with painted nails) female "hand model." It took a couple years before I noticed others doing it too. [REMOVED BY ADMIN] started maybe a year or so back?

My personal preferences: I like the Berk videos best & tried to model any coin video I make on their style. [REMOVED BY ADMIN] latex gloves give me the creeps a bit. [REMOVED BY ADMIN] uses a black velvet cloth or something, which I don't much like. I like the "au naturel" videos, and I'm fine with handling ancient coins of course, I do it daily, but holding the faces and spinning the coins like [REMOVED BY ADMIN] does to show the edges feels a bit odd, especially with stuff like the EID MAR gold Aureus or Kimon's facing Arethusa Tetradrachms with perfect toning....

Not unless they are a represented here by a Procurator Monetae. Which allows Berk to be named.
