Victorinus
« on: November 08, 2005, 01:45:53 pm »
Got this nice Victorinus Ant today and I am very very happy with it. I only have the sellers picture since it is too dark now to take a new one, but since the sellers picture did not show the colour in the right way (a bright brown instead of the correct black patina), I tried to change the picture a little bit.

I already got this type from Victorinus in very nice condition ( https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=581&pos=16 ), but on the new one, Pietas is bare headed instead of veiled. Anyway, I just couldn't let go such a masterpiece and it definitely made my day! I wonder, though there is no die match, whether the obverse die was cut by the same artist that cut the die of my second specimen. Just speculating, of course.

Regards
Lars

It is a nice coin in an outstanding condition.  The personification figure is beautiful as well as the portrait.
I wonder how at this difficult time the artistic side of coinage of  Roman Gallic empire  was maintained
at such a high level. I would say that it was a matter of prestige.
I am waiting now for a Probus coin with a very attractive portrait.

Hi,

That is a very pretty coin, well done - nice to have both types of Pietas.

nice to have both types of Pietas.

I forgot to mention that it was mauseus who made me aware of the two different Pietas types - I was so in raptures about that portrait when I first saw the coin that I really didn't care about the reverse.

The previous picture was better, sorry to say that  ;) In any case, it is a beautiful coin and that is what matters. Congrats!

I think that the previous picture let the details look better. I agree that they look better on the first picture, but my pic shows how the coin really looks like and that is what I intended. Compare to the originals sellers picture (see below) from which I had to take all colours away. It may let the coin look great, but not like it looks in reality  :)

Hi Lars,
Lovely coin. You seem to be building up an enviable group of Victorinus of which I'm quite jealous :o
