Help with identifying possible Greek bronze
« on: December 04, 2021, 07:17:12 pm »
Weight 5.93 grams, diameter 19 mm

Seems like a Greek bronze, but the script does not look Greek to me. Is anyone able to identify?

Dear Adam R2 and Board,

What you have here is an ancient imitation of an Athena Promachos bronze of Mesembria.  Here are a couple of other examples plus the prototype (which is the earlier issue that used a sampi [Ͳ] in place of a sigma [Σ] in the ethnic):

What makes your coin a bit unusual is that the reverse appears to have been reversed!  Quite interesting, including the fact that the obverse looks to have been copied fairly well by comparison.

Hope this helps!
