Unknown AE17 - quadriga of hippocamps?
« on: January 26, 2020, 01:36:14 pm »
Help please. I can’t fully identify this coin.  It looks like a Phoenicia pseudo-autonomous issue? Obv:-  Head of City goddess right. Rev:- Poseidon? driving quadriga of hippocamps left.  There appears to be some symbols of characters above and on right field.  4.0gr 16.5-17.4mm 12hr axis Thanks

It is an interesting type.

Thanks Meepzorp, I see the series is considered rare.  However the dramatic variation in the size and style may suggest a large mintage?  Any thoughts on what ΛA, Φ monogram represent?

This type has been minted over a  period of about twenty years between 102/1 and 82/1 BC.
This autonomous coinage of Berytos is described in detail by Ziad Sawaya, "Les monnaies civiques non datées de Bérytos", The Numismatic Chronicle (1966-), Vol. 168 (2008), pp. 61-109:

The letters ΛA Φ are interpreted as abbreviation of ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩΝ ΦΟΙΝΙΚΗΣ, the Seleukid name of Berytos. But later there is also a BH instead of ΛΑ, abbreviating Berytos.

The article of Sawaya is very detailed, I haven't read it entirely  :-\, but perhaps you can find out to which variant your coin exactly corresponds :).
