Jaimelai's Coins
« on: July 10, 2009, 10:55:09 pm »
Hi all.  Just added a few more coins to my gallery.  I'm kind of new at this, so please let me know if anything looks amiss.

You have a nice "little" collection there (pun intended)!  ;D  With the exception of one coin, none are larger than 15mm.  It is difficult to find so many decent coins that small.  You have done so and have photographed them beautifully.  Thanks for sharing.

Best, Noah

Thanks!  Those are mainly dealer pics though - they look better than my attempts, so far.  I am reshooting a couple of the coins though and we'll see how they turn out.

Thanks, I think it was Noah's gallery that inspired me enough to start my own - quite impressive!  I have mostly self cleaned late Roman bronzes in my collection, but I'll try to add some of the more interesting ones.  The medusas started when I bought one a while ago before I read about all of the fakes out there.  I then bought another to compare and then another and another and so on...

you have quite the Apollonia Pontica collection there, very nice!   8)

however are you sure of the denominations?
i'm certainly no expert, but can the second one posted (at .59g) be the same 'diobol' as the first one which is more than twice that weight?
perhaps the second one is an obol? that would then make sense of the first and forth as diobols, and the third might be a tri-hemiiobol.

That is what I was wondering as there appears to be two different sizes, but I bought all four as "diobols" from the dealer and I have found no references for smaller denominations from Apollonia Pontica.  Perhaps they became smaller over time as did their big brother (or big sister rather) Medusa drachms becoming later "light drachms".

Any further comments or information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for looking!

Added a few more medusas (can't seem to help myself :)) and beefed up the descriptions a bit.  And to correct an earlier statement, I actually purchased 3 of the 4 "diobols" as "half drachms", though I still only see "diobols" listed in my references.

Thanks for looking!

That´s really a"nice little" collection!

I wonder what you will show us if you discover all the bigger denominations and the bronze.

OK, I've expanded my horizons a bit and added a few little bigger coins to my "little coin" collection.  Please note my beautiful Apollo profile coin from Apollonia Pontica.  I have to push this one as it is the most expensive coin in my collection (so far), though it was a "BUI" coin (Bidding Under the Influence)  or what may be called a "Saturday Night Special" (well, it's been a long, hot summer and I do like my Saturday afternoon beer or two).  Still, a really nice coin.  :)

Just added a few more interesting coins to my little coin collection.  Very happy with a new Pan coin and pretty nice portrait of Postumus.  Also, a couple galley coins from Phaselis that took me a couple days to attribute and then the next day I see Joe here has one for sale.  :)

The Pan is very nice. I also really like the Tetricus/Pax rev. I have a few of these, but mostly barbs and none as nice.

Thanks Chris.  I really like that Pax reverse too.  It is what drew me to that coin.   :)

Just added a few more Medusas to my collection that obtained from Forvm.  I was interested in the cracked reverse die that matched two others that I have.  Also recently purchased Topalov Apollonia 2007, so I'll be adding descriptions based on those books.  :)

Added a few more coins - thanks for the comments!  I redid a couple of the coins, but I'm still having a little trouble with Caracalla.  It is just so shiny - must have tried well over 200 shots with different settings, lights and angles.  I've posted the best two and can't decide which one to keep or if I should go back to the drawing board.  Any comments/suggestion would be appreciated.   :)
