Is this possible?
« on: October 30, 2007, 07:46:22 pm »
I have a coin I am looking at from a dealer who has never sold me a bogus coin.  Now I run into this little number.

The Obverse inscription IMP CL TACITVS AVG (mints Gaul, Rome and Ticinum) yet the Exergue is
KA :dot: :Greek_Gamma: - Serdicia

The obverse and reverse do not seem to match.  At first and second look the coin looks genuine.

Anyone have any ideas?

I am no expert on Tacitus, but the coin looks authentic to me. Could it possibly be a hybrid of the types you are referring to?

Rick,

You have the book.

See page 407, Serdica, table at the bottom of the page, all the way over to the right, a specimen listed from Vienna (W), also known from officina Delta.

Thanks

Still getting used to these books.

I guess RIC needs to be updated to list this obverse with Serdicia.

Rick,

If you're going to collect Tacitus, throw RIC away. Too many misattributed mints, missing varieties, wrong bust type designations etc....

It didn't help me that this is a very rare version of this coin.  It is not listed in RIC, not in the British Museum, not in Paris, Vienna, nor the Vatican collection.  The only collection listed is the Wein Collection.  I have no idea where that one is.

The other thing that threw me off was that it is not listed in Volume XII.1 (because Paris does not have it) but it is in Volume XII.2

I think from now on I am going to pay more attention to part 2 than to part 1.

W=Wien=Vienna.

The charts in part 2 are the meat of the books if your looking for known varities.
