What ONE coin in YOUR collection do you enjoy the most?
« on: June 21, 2009, 08:48:40 am »
For me , it would have to be the Vespasian As I bought here from Forvm some time ago. Being the first fairly nice coin for a poor man like myself, I remain quite pleased with it.

Lets hear it from you guys.

Hard question... I enjoy all of my coins, all of them for a different reason. But, somehow, my Messana tetradrachm is in another category

Ihsanthecursed, I cannot argue with some picking a Vespasian as their most enjoyable coin! lol

I too will pick one as well:

Vespasian AR denarius
Rome mint, 70 AD
RIC 16

Well, David , If I had to live under the rule of a Caesar I think Vespasian would be either my first or second choice. Historical value aside, that is a great Denarius. Am I mistaken in assuming that the Reverse of that type is somewhat scarce?

Those aresome VERY nice coins guys, wish I knew more about the Greek one though.

SICILY: Messana. Ca. 412–408 BC. AR tetradrachm (17.27 gm). Charioteer driving mule biga left, two dolphins nose to nose in exergue / Hare leaping left over horizontal barley ear, dove flying left above, MESSANION in exergue. Toned. Striking flaws on reverse affecting hare´s head, otherwise extremely fine.

My favorite coin is in the link below in my gallery.  I was smitten by the master portrait and magnificently crafted reverse.

Mine is probably the Brutus portrait denarius (the Rufus one of 41 B.C.).

Not far behind are my Jersualem mint Heraclius solidus and a posthumous Alexander tetradrachm on a very large flan.

Well, not very rare nor "neat"; but to me, these are the coins that drew me to the ancients...I got them together and I can't really pick a favorite, so I list two:

That's a great Old Style Tet.  The new style tet is in ownderful shape, but personally, the old style tets really just speak to me.  I have one that's battered and am looking to upgrade.

By the way ecoli, I just took a look at your core collection: Greek coins gallery.

Great stuff in there.  I'm going to have to go look at some of you rother galleries when I get a chance.

Right now it's this one:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-42933

14mm, 1.6g
obv: bust of ?, wearing Taenia right
rev: MAPKIANOΠOΛITΩN; lion right

AMNG - ; Hristova/Jekov -; BMC -; Lindgren -; SNG Righetti -; Sear GICV -; Moushmov -

Unpublished, what some dealers would call 'apparently unique', not known to
experts in the field (haven't heard back from the BM unfortunately).
What's more it's absolutely beautiful and exactly the typwe of coin I love.
Small, pseudo-autonomous with an anepigraphic obverse (which is something that's very appealing to me for some reason)
nice green patina, much better in hand. This is a perfect ancient coin for me. Of course I wouldn't mind if it was published somewhere as I have no idea what to call the figure on the obverse.

It's hard to pick just 1 so I'll submit 2 for your consideration, although I could probably choose 4 or 5!

The first is a great Flavian:

IMP CAES VESP AVG PM
laureate head of Vespasian right

AVGVR PON MAX
simpulum, sprinkler, jug and lituus (emblems of the augurate and pontificate)

Scarce
Rome 70-71 AD
Sear 2281

Even though I only own two Greeks (one is an Aklexander drachm) the other is this baby, which I can't stop holding!

Archaic head of Athena r., with almond shaped eye, wearing crested helmet
ornamented with three olive leaves and floral scroll, wire necklace, round
earring.

AQE right
owl standing right, head facing, erect in posture, prong tail, to left olive twig
and crescent, all within incuse square

16.8g

SNG Copenhagen 13; Sydenham 2526

It is difficult to choose from a greater collection. But I think this one is outstanding.

And thanks to all its predecessors who have enabled it hat this coin is now in my hand.

Best regards

Probably this coin of Roman  Mauretania with bust of Baal and Agrippa. Very unique appearance and rather hard to come by.

Well, if Jay can submit two, the so can I...  I was torn between the Antoninus Pius I posted and this wonderful Licinius II in the link below.  I have not seen a better portrait of the young lad.  So, here it is...the last one...I promise (unless someone decides they have three coins in their collection they can't choose between).  ;) JK

It may not be a Kimon dekadrachm, but I love it. I did not think I would own a Syracusan 4dr for many more years:

Ahh, so we are allowed to post more than one

Unfortunately I don't have a large quantity of GREAT coins (for now ;D), but I have several good ones.

So here's another of my favorite, searched for some time for a decent (and affordable...) one like it. Not the nicest and my pics doesn't give any credit to it, but still...

ISLANDS off CARIA. Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 229-205 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24mm - 13.26 g). Tharsytas, magistrate. Radiate head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose with bud to right; to left, eagle standing right on torch; QARSUTAS above. Ashton 215; SNG Keckman 550; SNG Copenhagen -.

Don't think there's anything to say about LordBest coin, it speak for itself...
