Some Provincial Palaeologan types from Anaia (with pics)

Here are some more interesting coins from the excavations at Anaia.

The authors originally described these coins as stamena of John V & John VI (Sear 2535), which is of course unlikely to say the least. More likely they are examples of provincial issues from Anatolia in the late 12th – early 13th centuries, when Constantinople had essentially lost contact with the Greek Asian cities during the course of the Turkish invasion (see Bendall PCPC p.76).

In fact these coins meet the description of PCPC 379 (and PCPC 147), although it’s hard to tell whether they match the PCPC coins given the poor state of the latter.
