7 Campania, butting bull spear above ID
« on: December 02, 2013, 05:02:59 am »
My seventh coin looks familiar, but the type is rather abundant:
AE 19, 5.35 grams
Female head left, object (cap of Liberty?) behind/
Butting bull (man-headed face?) right, spear above. Looks like a coin from one of the Campanian cities, but Brettion also has bulls, so I know too little about these coins and trying to find them is a wild goose chase.

This can't be too difficult, can it?

Hi Frans,

It's not Campania. On Campania coins, the bull is not butting. And yours doesn't look like a MFB coin.

It is unlikely to be a Bruttium coin.

I am leaning more towards a Sicily (Syracuse?) or Asia Minor coin.

ACR auction: Lot 52: Greek Coinage Sicily, Syracuse, Agathokles (317-289); AE, (g 3,38, mm 16, h 2); [ΣYPAKOΣIΩN], head of Arethusa l., behind flower (?), Rv. Bull butting l.; above trident. CNS II, n. 104a Ds 51. Fin[...]
I think it is it, but then with the bull the other way round. Even the fabric and the make look similar. It is not in Magna Graecia and I do not know the refernces given by the Italians.
Can anyone help?

Frans
