We have turned on NumisWiki links on the discussion board.   I hope you find them useful and are inspired to contribute to NumisWiki by adding or editing pages.

It may slow down the board, we are working to see if we can make it faster.

Most links all seem to go to FORVM's catalog, not Numiswiki?

If there is a catalog page with the name (Emperors for example then it goes to the catalog).  But there are over 5000 pages in NumisWiki and maybe 100 (never counted them) in the catalog

Please note, also, that if you click Aurelian (for example) on the discussion board and it go to Aurelian in the catalog, you can then click Aurelian in the catalog and it will go to the NumisWiki page for Aurelian

Any word that normally links will not link if it is put between two vertical lines (the symbol above \ on the keyboard).

It hasn't quite fixed the link - if you check the url in the address bar if you follow it, you will find the relative numiswiki url is still embedded in it.   Coinarchives can obviously handle it, as the right search still runs, but other sites might not.

I fixed it completely.  It is a little tricky.  Here is how it must be typed up...

I just noticed the links in the discussion posts today - our street has had a power cut, and more to come, I think.   In general they work well and are useful, I think.  The drawback to having a comprehensive Nimiswiki is that you get links from innocuous words like "good" which goes to an explanation of the coin grade.  But that is a small price.

I made a way to leave specific words unlinked, let me know if you find more; his, had, price and good are already fixed.
Also when you post a link it should not be changed, but there are few special cases I still have to deal with. Please continue to post such examples.

I don't mind the strange links.   I have learned a lot by clicking on links just to see what they could be.  I am curious what "had" could be about in NumisWiki.   The link to price is probably very useful.  At least once a year I get an email telling me the catalog is confusing because an Alexander the Great drachm is listed with the Price 2963 and also with $95 (the specific numbers are a hypothetical example).  I just changed back had and price

We can also make autolinks to other websites.  I added wildwinds and coin archives.

'Had' links to Hadrianus.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=had

I'm not convinced that this is very useful, but it really doesn't matter compared to the links which are useful.

"Pat" links to Pater.  Not appropriate in the case of Pat Lawrence!

Although at first I didn't have much of an issue with this change, I am finding it is beginning to annoy me, in long posts anyway.  Take for example this contribution from Curtis:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=50568.msg314370#msg314370

All the blue makes it a lot harder to read, particularly when it's mixed in with the parts Curtis puts into caps for emphasis.

Perhaps I am alone in this, but I'd prefer to at least have the option to be able to turn it off.

Essential to be able to turn it off.  With age my typing makes more metatheses, as does moving from the larger to the smaller computer.  I rely on the markers for spellings that are not recognized.  Having things change colors for assorted reasons, and not for a single reason that the Search requested (as in Google) is a distracting nuisance.  At the very least, Her must not bring up Herakles and Herodotos and Herodian as well as Hera.  But, actually, it should be our private option to go to Numiswiki, which, to be sure, is excellent.  But as it is, it's as if you couldn't read any book without being reminded to go the the Britannica or whichever.  Also, the blue font is not so legible as the black.  Similarly, trying to correct things in Modify and forced to have a blue background merely makes it harder to spot them all, such as commas when you meant a period.
If I want it, I should be able for that session to click 'on' the Numiswiki keying.

Testing:

his
good

Yes, both of these are still active links - earlier, I though Joe had turned those two off?

Added: But when I modify my post using the little pencil-and-paper icon at the bottom right, that turns them off!  Interesting.  In fact I suspect that all links are turned off on a modified post.

testing: Pat, had

Yes.  But when I modify the post using the large "modify" icon above the post, they are turned back on.

So it looks as though you can make an unlinked post by starting one off, then completing it using the small icon below and to the right.  You can't add pictures using that icon, so you'd have to put your photos in before doing the modification.

I am leaving this posting with the links turned off, as far as I am concerned.  Are they off for everyone?

Oh, when I come back later to this thread, the links are live again.  So the turning off was only temporary.

It doesn't matter how you modify you post, the results will be the same.

It is possible to turn of a link or links in your own post.  If you put a word between two vertical lines (the symbol above \ on the keyboard), it will not make a link and the lines used to turn off the link will be invisible.

I'll try that: Pat good had Pat good had

The first trio has the lines, the second does not.

Yes, it works as advertised - thanks!  Though, when edited using the small icon on the bottom right, not only are the links turned off, but the lines appear - until I come back later or refresh the browser page.

Pat good had  - vertical line before Pat and after had.

pat good had - Vertical line before Pat and no others.

pat good had  - Vertical line after had and no others.

So it looks as though one vertical line before or after the word turns off the link for that word.

Sorry for reviving this very old thread but I still have problem with links which are modified and points (partially) to Numiswiki.

What should I do if If I want, for example, this link to be clickable: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/notinric/6ale41v.html

There is "ale" in it which is connected with Numiswiki. I tried to put this 'ale' between two vertical lines but link still does not work.

Thanks Joe for your answer, but I have read this thread and tried to use that trick with vertical lines and it does not work.

See here: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=123949.msg747739#msg747739

Link is exactly the same as yours.
