2022 Member of the Year - Alex McCallum (Alex*)
« on: March 01, 2023, 08:16:32 pm »
I am pleased to announce that we have honored Ralph Thomann (Shanxi), our Tribunus Plebis 2018, as our newest Tribunus Plebis Perpetuus. Thanks Ralph for sharing your expertise in 2757 posts since you joined in 2011. As I mentioned when you were selected as Tribunus Plebis back in 2018, nearly all of your posts are helping members with identification. This is perhaps the most important assistance we provide to collectors here on the boards, and your posts have been an important part of that effort. Your expertise is impressive. This award is an expression of sincere appreciation and admiration from our members for the help and the education you have provided. Thanks!

Congratulations to Alex McCallum (Alex*) our Tribunus Plebis 2022! Thanks Alex on behalf of Forum Ancient Coins and all our Classical Numismatics Discussion members for your outstanding and unique contributions to this community. Your shared knowledge in 2101 posts since you joined in 2003 (20 years ago!) have made the the discussion a better place all these many years (20 years!). Many of your posts are helping members with authentication and identification, and you encourage new collectors and new members. Thanks for your moderation of the Members' Gallery and for sharing your own interesting and diverse collection there. Thanks for running the Best of Type challenges - you make our discussion and gallery more fun! This award is an expression of sincere appreciation and admiration from our members for the help and the education you have provided. Thanks!

On behalf of all our members, I would also like to thank all our nominees. The votes were very close and clearly deciding who to select was a difficult choice. Thank you, all of you, for generously sharing your time and expertise. You all deserve more appreciation and honor than I can express.

Thanks to all for the unexpected "perpetuus."

And congratulations to Alex*. Well deserved.

Your detailed descriptions in the gallery are always interesting and worth reading, and I also find it good that a moderator who helps to keep the forum running gets the title.

Thank-you all very much. That was completely unexpected and, looking at the efforts made by some of the other contenders, I feel a little embarrassed. I am also embarrassed regarding that photo, where on earth did that come from?  :o

Congratulations to you too Ralf, very well deserved.

May I ask a stupid question?

How is the member of the year election working?

I thought the one with most votes would win, in this case Ralph Thomann (Shanxi).

In the poll Ralph Thomann (Shanxi) had most votes 21, second was Jay Grande (Jay GT4) with 19 votes and third place were together Alex McCallum (Alex*) and David MacDonald (djmacdo) with 14 votes.

Ron Cormier (Ron C2)
    10 (11.9%)
David MacDonald (djmacdo)
    14 (16.7%)
Jay Grande (Jay GT4)
    19 (22.6%)
Charles Wiley (wileyc)
    6 (7.1%)
Ralph Thomann (Shanxi)
    21 (25%)
Alex McCallum (Alex*)
    14 (16.7%)

Total Members Voted: 33

I see this results no matter if I am logged in or not.

And of course anyone, who was nominated would have deserved to win and if Alex McCallum won it would be well deserved but the poll shows me a different result and I think that has to be explained.

How is the member of the year election working?

I was already Tribunus Plebis 2018, so I have now been named Tribunus Plebis Perpetuus (totally unexpectedly, by the way) rather than Tribunus Plebis 2018 and 2022.

The member with the most votes who has not yet been awarded has been honoured as Member of the Year, and that is Alex*.

Of course, this is a somewhat unfortunate position for Jay. Finished second and came away empty handed. But I think next year he will get another chance.

Ok, I understand now but it is only working as long as there will be at least someone nominated who has not been member of the year before.

If not member of the year will stay vacant for this year.

For example if only this ones would have been nominated, all were already members of the year, who would get the titel for 2022?

David MacDonald (djmacdo) 14 votes

Jay Grande (Jay GT4)  19 votes

Ralph Thomann (Shanxi)  21 votes

If only members will be nominated who have won already the title member of the year this system will not work, because they have already the titel member of the year xyz and can not be the any new member of the year for this year.

This is very theoretical now. There is a long list of members who deserve nomination. That is why it will not happen.

And if there will be only one nominated who has not been member of the year so far he will automatically be member of the year no matter how many votes he/she will get.

I think this system is there that 2 members can win per year but the results of the member of the year of this year will not necessarily represent the votes.

I think Alex McCallum (Alex*)  would have won sooner or later with most votes the election even if there will be only one winner per year, yes he deserves it for his all time work to be honored.

I do not like this system, if the votes do not need to represent the result.

If there must be 2 winner I would have made :

1. Member of the year for members who contributed much last last year

2. And another one for members who are maybe not so active  but who were contributing and helping much every year (something like a lifetime achievement).

I think our member of the year system is working just fine. None of the potential problems you have identified have happened and I do not expect them to happen. It has been going for almost two decades now.

I just wish you would tell us your name Din X so we could nominate you. I think you would have a good chance of being selected.

I think the system works, if a tad confusing. I agree that Din X would have a good shot and I remember a few years ago trying to nominate Altamura. but he too does not reveal his name. That is, of course, a personal decision that I respect, but he would be another one that would have a great chance. In the meantime, we all benefit from both of y'alls expertise.

Every single person who has won this yearly poll totally deserves it.
