New addition, another Roman Republican, I just love these since I started noticing them, they are simply beautiful and I have been purchasing them so far on pure eye appeal and, to a much lesser extent, on history, although all the history is interesting. I cannot acquire them as quickly as some other coins I have obtained, but I have allocated some budget to them. I also post these quicker than my lot purchases since I can get the photos from the dealer/auction listings. This one is from Forum. And, as always, it is nicer in-hand than the pic.

Some new coins, kind of eclectic and not high quality, just interesting to me. My process is slowly photographing stuff I already have and adding. But when I get new stuff, I have been adding to the gallery if there is a dealer/auction house pic available. I do this before it goes in my trays. I try to keep track of what I need to photograph, but since I started the gallery, new coins other than lots have been getting added before coins I already have (because Photos!). Hence you get my first Roman Imperials as being two fairly lame very late rulers. So, he we go. I love the late Empire, just so you know. LOL. All of these were from Forum's Members Auctions of recent weeks where there are some pretty interesting coins at decent prices, if not NGC MS150 slabbed condition.

Greek, Aeolis, Aigai: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=180321 (I actually have another of these, I just like them, who can't like goats?)

Greek, Macedon, Phillip II: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=180323 (I actually have 15 or more Phillip II naked horsemen coins I need to finish cleaning. This is an issue I am looking to collect variations. Kind of weird the first one I post is this one, only because I have had many for a while now)

The next two are, of course, a pair:

Roman Empire, Eudoxia Augustahttps://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=180324

Roman Empire, Arcadius: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=180325

I have no idea how to grade any of these, so have just left that out of it.

This one for now is only going in my Asia Minor, Western folder, I know it belongs in other places. I got this one in 2021.

Roman Provincial, Ionia, Ephesus, Augustus and Livia: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=180504

My notes on this one: Light green patina. In NGC encapsulation 5872734-031, graded VF. A couple of interesting things about this one, this is to this day the least expensive coin I have ever bought at auction. ANS probably lost money getting this one encapsulated unless they really got a deal from NCG. And I popped it out of its prison as soon as I got it. I did keep the little NCG tag in case it matters one day and I suspect it will not. The only email ANS has never answered me on was my email asking why they sent all these coins to NCG.

Ex- CNG Keystone 4, Sep 2021; Ex-the Robert W. Bartlett Bequest Sold for the Benefit of the American Numismatic Society, purchased from Louis DiLauro, May 1981.

Nice little coin, really.

Here is one I just got, it is a dog coin, but pretty cool. I love being able to post coins I don't have to photograph myself. LOL. I have to admit, I do not get the inverted hare thing. Plus I am not really 100% comfortable with the attribution here, but thought I would post it and keep looking, since usually CNG gets it right..

Another new coin here, not very exciting, but part of the fabric of the history I love.

I am really excited about this coin, although on the surface, it may not be that impressive. Why do I love this one?

-while low grade, it is not so bad in hand. I like the portrait of Laodike on obverse, it looks pretty decent, actually, as does the star.
-It is from Sinope, my favorite city
-It was minted during the reign of Pontic King, Mithradates V, who has almost no coins
-It has Laodike
-The countermark makes it more intriguing
-It is super rare, R2 in Hoover.
-Provenance goes back to before 1912, my oldest in this regard

Complete Gallery listing that I usually don'y put in posts:

Greek, Phaphlagonia, Sinope (Pontos)
125 - 120 BC
AE 17 mm, 3.57 grams, 0 degrees

O: Veiled bust of Laodike right, star countermark to left
R: ΣΙΝΩΠΗΣ, facing statue of Apollo Iatros holding branch over tripod and phiale

Ref: SNG Black Sea 1542; HGC 7 423 (references do not include countermark).

Ex- Marc Breitsprecher, Feb 2023; ex-Chicago family collection; ex-Elie Boudeau, Paris dealer, includes his tag from before 1912.

Notes: Good Fine+. Very interesting coin and pedigree. Very rare (Hoover rarity is R2); minted under Mithradates V and there is only one official royal coin of Mithradates V. Sinope was the capital of Pontos at this point and had been conquered in 183 BC. The countermark seems to be even more rare and the star countermark is associated with Pontos and the royal family of Pontos. On AcSearch, only four specimens exist from 2016 to 2023, three do not have the countermark. Fascinating coin in so many ways. Needs more research by me.

On the dealer, Elie Boudeau: tag dating prior to 1912 - with dealer name, coin description and price (1.00 franc, about 20 cents) hand-written in French with an ink pen. Élie Boudeau (1853-1912) was a politician and numismatist in late 19th century-early 20th century Paris. He served in the 5th legislature of the Third French Republic from 12 November 1889 to 14 October 1893. He owned a shop in the numismatic district of Paris at 11 Rue Rameau, only a stones throw from the Bibliotheque Nationale and one block from the Rue Vivienne where several coin shops, including CGB, still exist today.

Thanks to Curtis JJ for help with the image for this coin and tag

New addition, slowly filling in the few remaining spots in my Elymais collection. This is a nice, I think, example for Prince A, van't Haaff 19.1.1, seller graded it at EF. These are not expensive, but you have to look for them. I need Prince B and the most expensive ones after that.

Some new additions to my gallery. I really wish I could take better photographs. The coins generally look way better in hand. Here is a variety of new ones, some of which I have had a while, many are from a lot I bought from Forum a few months ago that I am enjoying working out.

Virgil I think all of those could benefit from improved lighting.

Maybe surf over to the coin photography sub forum and look through the various lighting setups. Some of the tips can be done pretty inexpensively.

You could also look into a micro 4/3 camera setup. Used stuff from Panasonic and Olympus is pretty affordable and makes a massive difference in the photo results for coins.

I totally agree, Ron, and I have tried a number of things. I even have a lighting setup. But, it has occurred to me I may need different frequency lights and plan on looking up specialized bulbs for photography. I you have any advice on that, I would appreciate it.

Latest addition that actually has a decent photo because I am using Forum's photo. Man faced bull coin. I will credit Nick Molinari's book, Acheloios, Thales, and The Origin of Philosophy, for me wanting a man-faced bull coin. The book is really good, even if it was over my head at times. Fascinating read and I find his conclusions quite convincing. Knowing what the man faced bull is makes all the difference in understanding these coins. I am thrilled to have an example.

I have always felt flashes made for photography produce the best light. You may want to try incandescents as they don't have a frequency.

New coin added. I almost put this one in the COTD section as it has the nicest obverse of any I have seen. But, I am not sure I have any coins that qualify for this section. My wife wants a necklace made out of this because she is a Taurus and she loves this coin. It is really incredible in hand. Rated R1 in Hoover, this is not one I see often available. Very happy to have snagged it.

This is a cool coin Virgil, and I wouldn't hesitate to add it to the COTD gallery. I would NOT make it into a necklace, although I know how difficult a Taurus can be!

Hi,

Phoenicia Sidon: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=180872

Nice coin Virgil but i would suggest that you change your identification to Arados rather than Sidon  ::)

I can confidently place your coin to between Aradian years 127-128 (133-131 B.C). I have highlighted in red the era date and the arrows point to Athena on the left and Poseidon to the right (reverse).

Click on the links below to see my coins from the same era dates.

I tend to agree on the necklace, but that ship has sailed  ;D My wife argues that a necklace is better than the coin being hidden away in one of my cases. I can't really argue with that even if my cases do get opened up and coins looked at quite a bit. I am going to get it made with a setting that will not hurt the coin or at least not much. The plus side is she has wanted to learn everything she can about this coin and the historical area and context. She is a good sport normally with my collecting and is interested, but I tend to bore her at times much like she bores me at times with her interests.
