Nero Denarius
« on: June 04, 2011, 06:47:50 pm »
I acquired this denarius of Nero at a popular auction site.  Not on the NFSL, not a private listing, not a new seller.  Coin feels and looks fine in hand.  No evidence of casting (seem, bubbles, or anything else I can see) to my eye.  The only, and absolute only, thing that makes me wonder, is that the sale was listed as Vienna, Austria, and came from Hungary.  I'm failrly new, and most of my denarii are Flavian.  Again, it does not look like a fake to me, and it does not feel like one.  The flan crack on the obverse at 7 o'clock goes through the flan to the reverse.  I just wanted a second look by more experienced people.  I greatly appreciate anyone willing to take a look and give an opinion.

My description and measurements as follows:

Nero 54-68 A.D..  AR DenariusRome Mint. c. 66-67 A.D.  (3.25g, 17.2mm, 6h ).  Obv: l to r in- IMP NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS, laureate head right.  Rev: l to r in- IVPPITER CVSTOS, Jupiter, bare to waist, seated left holding thunderbolt  ring  right, and long scepter in left.  RIC I 64, RSC 121.

Based on the photogrpahs and your description, I see no reason to doubt its authenticity.

I agree, looks worn but genuine in picture.
