I have lived my entire life in Dutchess County, New York- right across the Hudson River from Brian L, in fact!

I don't believe either of the local shops here in the Poughkeepsie area carry ancients, though I have not yet asked.

I Live in Toronto Canada but I come from the land of the Bretti...Calabria...Scigliano to be exact just outside of Lamezia Terme.  Apparantly Pliny mentioned the town (known then as Sturni). I'll have to dig that one up to see what he says about us  ;D  My family goes back several hundred years which is born out by the cemetary.  Everyone has one of only 4 names!

Ohio, USA...not too many ancient coin shops around here, but not a lot of people either!  Have been lucky to find some ancients randomly over the years though, and the rise of the internet has definitely made it even easier.  Is fun the looks you get though when you ask about them.

Nice thing is its a good central location between the cities on the coast and Chicago, and we even get 4 or so dealers in ancients/medieval at coin shows here.

I live in Chicago, am originally from Missouri.
Have lived in Chicago for past 43 years, and for 6 years in my childhood.
I've worked as packinghouse worker, painter, in a steel mill, teacher,
assistant golf professional, writer, special ed camp developer,
and small business owner.  I'm now 68 and retired.

I have less experience with ancient coins than almost anybody on this site.
But, I am learning.  That's good for an old dog.   ;D

I attended the ANA World's Fair of Money twice here about two weeks ago.
That re-interested me in Ancients since I bought one from Harlan J. Berk, Ltd, from Shanna.

1971-1975:  Baton Rouge, Louisana
1976-1979, 1AD, Ansbach, Germany
1979:  Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama

2005-Present:  Tampa, Florida

So, where am I truly from?

Legatus

P.S.  I love Europe.  I love travelling to Europe.  My son lives in Belgium and I'm in Europe at least twice per year on business.  French, Spanish, Italian, Greek food are all great, but give me the hearty German food anytime.

Hi Legatus,

Looks like we have a few points in common.

I'm from Winchester, VA. Used to go through Capon Bridge quite often, especially to visit my parents in Moorefield, my wife didn't like the winding roads through Wardensville, so we took US 50 and turned south at Junction a few miles passed Romney.

I was in Ft. Knox in 1980, training to be a tank driver ;)

Looks like we were in Ft. Bliss at the same time! I was there from Nov. 1980 thru Apr. 1982. 3/3 ACR. I only had a 2 year active enlistment, and got out at that point.

I'm now in Logan, Utah.

I agree about West Virginia being "God's country"! When I lived back east I would go there as often as I could. I particularly loved Seneca Rocks and the surrounding area! I really miss it :'( Though, I've been able to find beautiful areas where ever I've been! Did you ever get to Cloudcroft, New Mexico, while at Ft. Bliss?
I especially love the mountains! I now get to explore the Rockies :) The scenery is certainly different here in the west, more open and grand. I would really like to explore to beautiful and historical areas of Europe! Maybe someday ::)

Welcome to Forvm! I've really learned a lot and enjoyed sharing this hobby with the many fine people here!

All the best!
Steve Evans

First off, Winchester is basically Capon Bridge to me.  My wife and I did all our shopping there.  It was only 25 miles and had everything we needed.  I raised cattle so I used the feed store in Winchester for everything I needed.  I was a real cattle baron.  I owned 6 head of prime Hereford beef.  Every Fall I'd take them in for slaughter and every late winter I buy 6 more to fatten.  I truly enjoy that life, but my wife, although raised a country girl, having lived in Europe, couldn't go back to country living.  Ah well, that's life.

I was never a tanker although it seems an awful lot of my career centered around them.  I was MI.  When I was at Bliss I worked in the Directorate for Combat Development (DCD).   And yes, we went up to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso many a time to camp and trout fish.  Great places.  Beautiful scenery.  Nearly as beautiful as WV.

I think someone already said this, but it does seem odd that so many former military types collect Ancient coins.  I collect only Roman, but I would broaden my collection to Greek coinage if I could read Greek.  I think some of the best looking coinage comes out of the Greek era.

Thanks for taking me down memory lane.  I'd go back to West Virginia in a heartbeat if all the planets and stars would line up just right.
