Buy now ask questions later

This is a case of a get now and worry about later, i.e. when in hand but curiosity hat got the better of me. Any ideas from my brilliant associates? It is Gordian III.

I would bet money on it being Gordian III, but the mint has me stumped.
A keeper.

Thank you Vladimir, missing the C at the beginning makes things a little incomplete. I think it is there just very faint.

Since I have never heard of coins from Sestos Minted under Gordian III it could be a very nice find, unless the reverse die belongs to another emperor.

Hi gg,

Yes, Vlad P. is probably correct. "CHCTI" or "CHCTI :Greek_Omega: N" appear to be appropriate reverse legends for Thrace, Sestos coins.

I have a countermarked Sestos coin issued by Augustus (scroll down, last coin):

Regarding your coin's obverse legend, I see "... :Greek_Delta: IANO". That would imply Gordian III. So, your assumption is probably correct. However, the obverse portrait may also be Severus Alexander.

According to snible.org imperial coins of Sestus were minted from Augustus to Philip II. Here is a similar coin of Philip I from BnF, Paris:

Hi Meepzorp,

The Gordian was obvious to me and that it why I bid on it. The missing C at the beginning on the reverse (which I think is there if one looks closely, and when in hand I think it will be confirmed) made identifying it interesting. Also, given that I have not seen any coins of GIII from Sestus makes it a special coin indeed. It will certainly lead me on adventure to find more examples!!

Thank you
