(1/1)

corvus:
very neat and  rare Barbarous issue Septimius Severus Denarius I just received :)
Unpublished denarius of Septimius, a similar gold Aureus is mentioned in RIC
close to RIC 342a
Date: 193-211 AD
Ov: Septimius r.
Rv: Septimius on horseback, gibberish legends
Size: 16mm
Weight: 2.1 grams

maridvnvm:
Very interesting.
The reverse device looks quite similar in style to that on this PROFECTIO AVG from Laodicea. The obverse legends can still be made out to some extent and could possibly be L SEPT SEV AV[G IMP XI] PART MAX.

corvus:
Hi Martin,

I think reverse device might be up from literate level of engraver? It can be nonsense or some letters with  "mirror" effect (I have one Finnish imitation of Basil II where such effect clearly visible) or copy from any unknown reverse type?
Obverse I must agree with you, and if those letters are correct - and they seems - why shouldn't  be than reverse, leaving us with option that we have never seen such reverse type...
