Enigma of Magnia Urbica. Please help
« on: July 09, 2022, 04:57:28 am »
Hello

Here is a quinarius aureus from Magnia Urbica.
Metal: gold.
Measurements: approximately 19mm and 2.25g.
Inscription on the obverse: MAGNIA VRBICA AVG and on the reverse: VENERI VICTRICI.
I attach three photos: the first taken in natural light, the second taken with flash and the third of the state found before cleaning. I initially thought it was a modern fake but the quality of the coin work and especially the fact that there is no known Magnia Urbica quinarius aureus to be imitated leads me to think that, maybe be, it is an unpublished coin. It is true that there is a similar quinarius in silver but it is seriously curious to imitate a silver coin in gold, it is the opposite that would be plausible.
Thanks for your help.

Since we all know that gold does not corrode or tarnish, I’m curious to know what kind of « dirt » was on your coin ?

I think the coin has been coated with a material (thick dust) that can be easily cleaned. Maybe deliberately to hide that it's gold.
