Title: Re: Blayne's Ancient Gallery-Uncleaned display
Post by: Blayne W on January 11, 2019, 02:51:32 pm
Today I am starting a new Gallery with coins that I have gotten uncleaned and have been cleaning them.  Most I feel will be in a constant state of trying to improve but I will upload the ones that I am most happy with.  Obviously they will primarily be the common types but I still believe they deserve a showing.

I am starting with one of my favorite series.

This is a Campgate from Constantine I

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152422

The second is another area were I am thinking I will focus on , which is Gallienus Zoo series.

My first Antelope.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152421

And finally today I have an Aurelian with the VIRTVS MILITVM reverse, which this version not in RIC.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152420

I believe I have all the attributions correct, but as always if you see a mistake please don't hesitate to tell me.

Thanks for looking and have a great weekend.

My first Domitian provincial from Side.  Thanks to shanxi and FlaviusDomitianus for helping to identify

Another Gallienus, this time with Sol reverse

Here are the new additions to my gallery today.

I bring today

a nice Fallen Horseman from Constantius II

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152624

a VOT XXX from Constantine The Great (not sure what to make of the edges on it)

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152625

also a very sharp Licinius , not 100% clear inf I have the exergue correct.  I believe it should read dot SMK which would make it not listed in RIC.  However, what I read as the Dot could just be part of the S missing off SMK.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152626

Anyways if anyone has any  opinions on any corrections I need to make, just give me a message.

Thanks again for looking and any comments.

Another Gallienus with the same Ric as two other coins in my gallery.

This one okidoki and otlichnik helped identify as a Hadrian with Clementia reverse.

The final one today shanxi pointed me in the right direction with a Severus Alexander.

Here are my next three coins from Aurelian.

The first looks better in hand but I have struggled to get a photo of it.  I have included two-one mine and the vender photo with the white background.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-153152

The next one is very nice.  Great colouring and obverse strike.  However, has been over cleaned at one point in parts.  Rated scarce from Ticinium.  My first coin from that mint.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-153151

And the third is another with the Sol Reverse, this time from Siscia.

All of these are pretty common

A Gallienus with Victory reverse

A coin from Antonius Pius honouring Marcus Aurelius
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-153174

Thanks guys for all your kind words regarding my gallery.  It has totally been a blast and I am enjoying find new areas of interest and creating an expensive want list.

This first one is my first hoard coin.  It is in uncleaned condition and it is from the South Petherington Hoard.

Secondly I have my first coin from Philip II celebrating his Olympic glory.

Title: Re: Blayne's Ancient Gallery
Post by: Blayne W on February 27, 2019, 05:41:59 pm
Thanks Harry.  Yeah the Valerian took me a bit to attribute as it doesnt seem to be very common.   Wildwinds I dont believe showed one with the shortened reverse legend, and Ocre listed it but showed no examples.   I did find some previous sales on acsearch to verify the attributation.
Title: Re: Blayne's Ancient Gallery
Post by: curtislclay on February 27, 2019, 06:01:41 pm
The standard attribution today of your new Valerian is Viminacium not Milan; Göbl  847b, 9 spec. in his photofile. Doesn't OCRE attribute to Viminacium?

I personally think that attribution is an error, or at least I remain to be convinced, as I have probably mentioned elsewhere in Forvm over the years!
Title: Re: Blayne's Ancient Gallery
Post by: Blayne W on February 27, 2019, 08:06:43 pm
Curtis thanks for keeping me on my toes.

You may be right, I may be wrong (I think someone wrote a song about something similar)

Just double checked the OCRE and it still does show Milan .  I will have to double check my Sear later tonight.  I dont have any Göbl yet, so unable to verify.

You just gave me more work to do.  and some more research  :)

Sear 9982 follows the current orthodoxy: Viminacium.

Post by: Blayne W on February 27, 2019, 08:35:10 pm
Yeah just saw that.  I also checked the acsearch records I looked at after locating the info through Ocre and they are all showing Viminacium.   Thank you again and I will get my info on my attributation updated

I had her hooked when I thought I had a Zenobia in one of my uncleaned lots.  Still planning on sending that coin away to have her checked when I get it a bit more cleaned.   Also will give me an excuse to buy the last of the Sear books.

Nice! ... hey Blayne, my cool Canadian coin-bro, I am loving your new collection additions (congrats)

Yah, although my wife is also a bit of a collector (primarily books, first editions), the good ol' ancient coin collector usually has a more aggressive and more compulsive collecting-appetite, eh? (ummm, addiction is such an ugly word), so yah, sometimes she'd give me the ol' stink-eye if I started buying too many coins

 ;)

=> I wish you all the luck in continuing your ancient coin-hobby "and" your marriage (hopefully both are super-fun and rewarding pastimes?)

Unfortuanately, my wife has no collecting hobbies, and I mocked her when she started doing Scrapbooking years ago, so really karma must be biting me in the ass.  Though she does seem to spend a fortune following her favorite band around.  Probably spent more then all my coins for her to meet her idol, Rob Thomas.

Ahaha ... yah, unfortunately that "groupie, stalking hobby" usually pays-off very little in the long-run

 ;)

I have a sister-in-law that spends a whole lotta cash attending miscellaneous Bon Jovi concerts (*awkward*)

Hey, I admit that I always loved Stevie Nicks in the ol' days, but luckily I never decided to spend all of my money riding the bus that followed their Fleetwood Mac bus (yup, I dodged a bullet)

I've been lucky ... so far. Every time I buy more coins I expect to receive that glare from my wife. So far I've dodged the bullet. Maybe I should ramp up the purchases and push my luck? But seriously, although she is not a collector she spends money in her own ways, and I don't reign her in, either. Neither of us are spendthrifts (I try to hold my discretionary spending down really low on everything other than numismatics), and what comes around goes around. Stkp

Added 4 more coins to my gallery this morning. 3 I have had for a while and 1 new addition.

First off are three I purchased though Forum Auctions.

Marcus Aurelius with Salus Reverse.

and two Augustus coins with differing countermarks.

The new addition is a tiny gem from Lesbos.  It is only 7 mm and .2 g.  Tough one to get a photo of. May have to update when I get a good macro lens.

Finally adding to my gallery again.  Seems like in the winter I get more free time.

These are a couple Campgates that I got in a lot back in June.  Just picked up 20 more Campgates from Forum today which I can't wait to add to my collection

First off a very nice condition Constantine from Thessalonica

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159046

and then a Constantius II from Rome

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159047

Just updated with photos in the post, remembering how to do this.

Filling in the gaps for coins that I have neglected posting

These two were purchased through the Forum Auctions.

The first I am not 100% sure of the full attribution though I feel I am pretty close.

This is a damaged Hadrian with Concordia reverse.  Even though it is damaged I did  like the portrait.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159054

This one is a pretty rough Trebonianus Gallus (my first)  Though not in the best condition I do have a soft spot for any coins with lions on them.

Just updated with photos in the post

Just looking at the Constantius II Campgate again on my work computer and I am not 100% on the attributation.  It looks like on the obverse side there is a pretty clear S but I dont think there should be with the legend PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS.  Maybe an overstrike?

I may have to pull this one and send it to identification for help now.

Still catching up ..

Two coins I picked up from a Savoca Coins auction earlier this spring.

First off a Vespasian with Victory reverse.  I loved the snakes in this one.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159073

Keeping with my theme of animals is this coin from Troas with Alexandria

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159072

I have come to realize I seem to have a soft spot for coins with animals.  If I ever find a Roman with a Golden Retriever ....

Serrated Anonymous isssue.  One of my first serrated coins.  I love the depiction of the Dioscuri

Secondly this issue from Q Marcius, C Fabius & L Roscius with Quadriga reverse.

then a Constantine from Cyzicus.  This is a best guess based on style and the process of elimination.

Adding a few more to my main gallery.  2 I have had a while and haven't been good at updating and 1 I just added.

First are two denarius with one from L. Thorius Balbus

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-160129

the second which was on my desired list from C Poblicius with Roma and Hercules strangling the Nemean lion.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-160128

The third today is a Provincial of Hadrian from Alexandria.  It was a spur of the moment purchase but am thrilled with it.  Love the clear Ibis on the reverse.

Need to pick up my pace to get things added however when I get working on my coins I get easily distracted and never get anything done.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the Campgates.  I feel my collection is growing nicely.

Well tonight I am showing off 5 of my additions to my Greek Collection.   Obviously from all the help I ask for in the identification forum I am not as confident in this area in attributing them, so feel free if you see any mistakes to correct me.

First off are three  city-states coins featuring elephants,

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-166259

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-166258

after the elephants we need a lion and Lysimachos' of Thrace obliges

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-166260

Finally tonight I have a Centaur reverse of Prusias II a King of Bithynia.

Hope you enjoy.  Tomorrow night I will dip into some Provincial coins I have picked up.

Tonight adding 5 more to my Greek and Provincial Gallery

Some of these I haven't totally attributed but hopefully, have them nailed down to type.  I have trouble when dealing with the monograms, etc.

Anyways starting us off tonight is a sharp-looking Ariarathes V from Cappadocia.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-166302

Then visit Apameia, Phrygia with another great looking coin, with Athena and an Eagle
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-166301

Next the first of my Gorgon coins from Pontus, this common one from Amisos.  I do like the colouring on this one.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-166300

Next we go to Cilicia, Anazarbus for a Zeus obverse and a seated Zeus reverse.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-166299

And finally tonight we pop over to the small island of Cos in Caria, with a left-facing Heracles and Crab reverse.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-166298.

Hope you all have a great weekend

Today I finally opened up my Gallienus Gallery-I plan on collecting one of each of his reverse deities as well as the Zoo.  That should keep me scouring for awhile.

Today I uploaded 10 to the gallery.  The first, I believe, is a Mule and somewhat scarce, the second an ancient imitation but most of them are pretty common.

Hope you enjoy.
