Lead Tessera with Nemesis
« on: October 02, 2013, 04:03:17 pm »
Hi, here is a very small lead tessera.  The pose of the figure reminds me of Nemesis, but I do not know what the object in front of her might be.  It appears to be pointed at an angle at the top, and there is a protrusion or branch to the left.  Any other ideas or opinions would be appreciated.  Thanks, V-drome.

Nemesis does lift fold of cloth to her mouth but the pose on this figure reminds me more of Venus, especially on the lead votive figures (3-D figures, not plates like this) common along the Danube.

No idea though what the item is.

Thank you, Shawn.  Venus seems very likely.  I have come across two more small tesserae or tokens from Caesarea bearing similar figures on the reverse.  One is fronted by Zeus Heliopolites, and the other by an uncertain figure.  Best Regards, Jimi
