Other Metal Antiquities / Re: Strange bronze head, middle east?
« Last post by maxthrax on Today at 01:49:45 am »
Hi,
This bronze head, probably a part of a figure or a bust(?), is said to be found several years ago in southern Bulgaria.
It doesn't look like anything from Thrace or Greece, but kinda middle east or Persia?..
I'm more inclined to think it's not ancient, but the patina and metal look real and old,
it doesn't look like it's made to deceive, not a fake.
Another thing that made me ask for some more info is the cuneiform signs on the top of the head.  Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Byzantine Coins / Re: Andronicus II, SBCV 2364?

SBCV 2457 has stars below left and right on the reverse - S.2364 has no stars (see below). And of course the ruler is crowned by a saint on S.2364.

For more details see here (towards the end):

https://www.glebecoins.org/paleos/Articles/The_Thessalonican_Trachea_of_A/the_thessalonican_trachea_of_a.html

Note that Grierson seems to conflate the two types in DOC V (he takes LPC 208,6 = S.2364 to be a variant of LPC 230,5 = S.2457).

yes I find Lianta's book helpful, a color copy you have, coins in color? interesting, how much easier is that on the eyes? I have a hardback 2009 spink copy from when it came out. Was looking for something to help a bit more with the Paeologan period. yes line drawings are easier on my eyes! wish there was a volume 2 of CLBC....
the Michael VIII Bendell/Donald pamphlet is a little helpful, hence I found a copy of the mentioned book and will take a look at it.

I was looking at Liantas and noted coin 810 as SBCV 2457 and that the Liantas coin shows what appears to be a four point star lower left though no mention is made of it in the description or in SBCV, the Grierson (1466) plate coin is cut off a touch but shows no evidence of a star either. Does your color plate show that possible star any different?

Identification Help / ID Help Jewish Coin

This coin is 25 mm, weighs 16 grams (quite hefty), and was purchased in Jordan near Petra.  I am new to this and haven't been able to find a match for this coin as either legitimate or fake.  What I am assuming is the reverse appears to be the facade of the temple at Jerusalem, similar to some of the Bar Kokhba coins.  I am grateful for any help that can be provided.

It’s fantastic to read the opinion of so many experts here. I’m not one of them, but my own researchs taught me that this coin has NOT been struck between December 10-19 1582 AD.
DT

It wasn't minted December 6-9, 1582 either!  I was there!
