Justinian I pentanummium, Rome mint
« on: November 20, 2013, 07:50:50 pm »
Hi! this is my new purchase. You often see pentanummium from Rome with V as mark of value, but this type with  :Greek_epsilon: is very scarce. It is  MIB I 230b, Sear 309b. Wich grade of rarity would you assign to this coin?

thanks!

..it is, but it´s MIBEC N230 an not 230b. 230b has the regnal year XXX inscripted in the E. N230 seems to be later than regnal year 30.

Best regards Posa

regnal year 30 ist 556/557, so this coin was probably minted from 557/558 on.
Rarity: I´m no specialist for Justinian, so I can´t tell you , if it appears regularly on sales, auctions,...
It seems to be rare, but  it´s no rarity, counted in single pieces. Wolfgang Hahn was the first and the last to count and look for numerical appearence. He must have found several specimens of this coin. But this tells us nothing about its current rarity, for, in my experience, the rarity of coins changes in political uneasy times like ours in very short intervals.
There is one speciemen offered on vcoins since months. If it was an absolute rarity, it wouldn´t last there for such a long time... ;)

Best regards Posa
