Provincial help
« on: March 10, 2014, 10:57:18 pm »
Hello Board,
I'm looking for some ideas on this small provincial which has eluded me.  19 mm   5.09 g

OBV:  Bearded, laureate, and draped bust right.  - Most likely AV KA M O? and ending NOC  the second A almost looks like an omega, but that would seem      unlikley

REV: Helmeted bust of Athena right - not much to go on for legend - two letter on the left.  I? A - I don't think it is an I however as there seems more to it under magnification.

I have been laboring under the assumption this is an Antonine, but have come up short.  The closest I've come is Commoduc from Canatha, but the style seems wrong.  Could it possibly be Macrinus?

As always, any help is greatly appreciated,

Kurt

Hi Kurt
Rare coins of L.Verus from Antioch ad Euphratem in Commagene
bear a close type of this helmeted Athena bust right (or left ). I think.!!

Thanks Bakkar.  The style of Athena on those examples does resemble my coin.  I'm afraid my coin seems to have a significantly shorter reverse legend than your coins (amazing coins as always Bakkar!).  Maybe this will trigger some new leads.

Thanks again,

Kurt
