Unusual Alexander silver fraction!
« on: October 04, 2007, 12:32:52 pm »
Hi,

I'm a fresher in Greek numismatics, I collect mostly Roman Imperial silver coins.

I just purchased an interesting coin from Lebanon. Tried to find it at coinarchives, wildwinds,
and SNG online, but this turned no resultes.

The seller who listed this coin gave the next description:

Greek I love this coin rare drachm silver coin xF SUperb

He writes "drachm", but as for me it is a smaller denomination.

Maybe, someone knows what is this coin?

Thank you very much for help!

It is my opinion (though you should wait for others, more experienced, to give theirs)
that this may well be a modern fake.

Lets imagine that this coin is fake... As for me it is not...

Do you know the original coin type for this copy?

Or this is just a fantasy of the man made dies?

It's just the look for me but wait for others' opinions.

In this case, the usual rule, to give the weight and the diameter (here the thickness also could be relevant, possibly) is really essential, since you are suggesting a different denominationPat L.

looks like a modern forgery to me. The types aren't authentic and the style is not ancient looking, particularly the lettering on the reverse.

- the obverse looks very much in style like a celtic imitation of an AE that I have - unfortunately I cannot post a pic from where I'm at but the face is similar.

I agree that the style isn't right; if my memory's correct, there's a similar but more ancient-looking silver fraction of this this type that Price lists as a modern invention but the BMC lists as authentic.
