Concordia with unknown object on back
« on: June 05, 2023, 09:35:59 am »
Dear friends of ancient mythology!

Concordia (Greek Homonoia) is a deity, or better personification, often depicted on ancient coins. Recently I noticed that she is depicted on a coin from Nicopolis ad Istrum with an unknown object over her left  shoulder.  Quiver or instrument of chastisement as in Nemesis would be inappropriate. It seems to be a longer object (rod or similar) with 3 balls on top.

The coin shown is Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2021) No. 8.26.36.8m, not in AMNG, not in Varbanov. . This reverse also exists for No. 8.26.36.4. Otherwise I have never seen this object.

Maybe there is someone who can enlighten me?

With thanks in advance
Jochen

Thank you shanxi!

As long as there is no better, we will probably have to be content with this prosaic explanation.

Best regards

I have no clue, but it doesn't look like a braid to me. Seems like an object attached to her dress or shoulder with a shaft and the three balls. I don't know what it might be, but it would be weird if it were part of her hair style. The linked images didn't make me change my mind.

Let's compare it with another coin.

This is young Caracalla, an earlier coin and probably the work of  a different die cutter.

In my opinion we see here a braid without doubt, but again you see the three balls aligned in a strait line. Still weird ?

Gotta admit that that last link does look like braids of some kind.

Hi shanxi,

I think that is convincing!

Best regards
