Victory Lane
« on: April 26, 2015, 05:27:00 pm »
i thought it might be nice to stroll down Victory Lane and admire all the lovely Nike's.   :)

this is a tetradrachm from Syracuse, with Nike erecting a trophy. i wish i had a better picture, as it really is beautiful in hand...

And his son Antiochos I Soter continued the tradition defeating the invading Galatians after many years of warfare..... no wonder this Nike is so dynamic even if she has the anorexic form of a supermodel!      https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-120346

And probably my most historic Nike ...  unusually one that in crowning Zeus presaged by weeks Seleukos' ultimate Victory to become last man (Diadoch) standing ...... https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-120321

My loveliest Victory:

Trajan, AD 98-117
AR - denarius, 3.27g, 18.0mm
       Rome AD 101-102
obv. IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM
        head, laureate, r.
rev. PM TRP COS IIII PP
Victory inscribing shield set on cippus, foot on helmet
RIC II, 66; C. 247; BMC 112
about UNC, superb mint luster, sharp, light toning
from Forum Ancient Coins, thanks!

Strack, Trajan, p.107: "A depiction which points to the end of a war or a campaign after a gained victory here as well as similar on the Trajan's column after the termination of the first Dacian war."(Curtis Clay)

Pat Lawrence: It's the type of "Victoria of Brescia". And she is a variant of "Aphrodite of Capua". It is suggested that the "Victoria of Brescia" originally was a Venus too, whom were added wings later. And that is the reason for this half-nude erotic depiction.
