Otacilia Severa (?) PROVINCIA DACIA id help
« on: December 13, 2008, 02:22:48 pm »
Afternoon all,

I rescued this from a block of multi colored crud a long while back and it has once again captured my interest. The coin is crusty and flat, but I am leaving it as is. I believe that it is of Otacilia Severa (the obverse legend starting around the 11 oclock looks to read ACI - L - S) and for a change I can read the entire obverse (PROVINCIA DACIA AN IV with DF in Dacia's banner). Any help will be most appreciated!

Chris

28mm 15.38g

PS what does the DF in the banner mean?

For a Dacia catalogue see Helvetica´s lists on "Forum Home".

D F means - according Pick, AMNG I page 5 - "Dacia Felix".

Thanks, it does indeed look to be Otacilia Severa, although the obverse legends aren't quite right. The two that it matches are MARCIA OTACILIA SEVERA AVG and MARCIA OTACIL-IA SEVERA AVG and this one looks like the IA at the end of her first name have been omitted. There is not enough space at all for an IA of the same size to be between the L and the S. I'll keep looking for a match, but at least I am sure of who it is!

Thanks again,

Chris

(edit) The Pick reference also has her full name. Maybe this one is a lesser seen variant?

There is always a good chance to identify new variants

as most of these cruds are not completely legible any more and -

who cares about details of a worn coin looking like a common Viminacium issue.
