Clean further or wax and flip?
« on: August 31, 2007, 09:11:23 pm »
First off, being new to this board, I hope I am not annoying you guys too badly, and I really appreciate the help I have recieved thus far, with that said...

I recently got a pretty good find and am wondering if I should clean it up a bit more (and there is some green junk here and there, but it is a billon coin, so I don't think it's bronze disease (unless there is a form that attacks billon...akkk...so much to learn!!!)

Anyway...here is the scan, please let me know what you think.

Chris

I would just flip it, there isn't anything that needs to be done. Keep an eye on the green edges.

The more questions you ask the better. And if you found that in an uncleaned lot it is a very good find.

Thank you both, yeah, I have been getting a bunch of bigguns lately and in the same lot I got this one I also got a nifty Hadrian that is cleaning up nice enough to see his wavy hair!  ;D  I'll post a pic when I finish but I have already been able to attribute:  Hadrian AE Sestertius. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, laureate head right / AEQVITAS AVG S-C, Aequitas standing left holding scales & scepter. (All cleaned with ideas and products suggested and sold by members of this forum btw!)

Yes, I can't see what you could do to improve this. Excellent coin! I'd love to find something like this in an uncleaned lot!

One last question on this one...should you wax silver and billon (I would assume you would do so with fourees to protect the silvering)?

Usually bronze is only waxed to prevent bronze disease. In my opinion silver loses some appeal if is waxed and it is also hard to hard off. In your case you should just leave the coin as it is.
