« on: December 06, 2021, 11:37:44 am »
Hello again,

Same question about this coin.
Is it a Gallienus from Neocaesarea, Pontos?

Weight: 11.6 gr
Diameter: 26mm

Thanks.

Patrick

Thanks Thilo,
One question, if I may, where do you get your references, specially for Gallienus coins.
Any website I could access?
Please let me know if you have any ideas!

Hi Patrick,

as Pekka wrote in the other thread, GCAM or Isegrim are your best choice - however, I prefer Isegrim which has even become better since Dane Kurth (Helvetia) has adapted and extended  it for Excel.

The head on the coin here is radiate, the one in RG is only laureate :-\:
https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k3990491/f14.item.r=Waddington%20Recueil%20G%C3%A9n%C3%A9ral  (number 11)

So it is at least a variant.

Well, Cizmeli, Le monnayage de Neocesaree et du koinon du Pont, has it with radiate crown (no. 478) and laureate (no.483). The coin’s date, 200, refers to the year 263/264 AD.

... GCAM lists it as radiate: ...

My impression is that there are two coins, see the screenshots from GCAM.

In my edition of RG the coins of Neocaesareia are on page 92 and not on 132 as mentioned here, and there is only a number 76 and no 76a.
Probably these references are pointing to a newer edition of RG.

Thilo was a bit faster, but with the same result :).

Well, but Thilo forgot to say: Hey Patrick, congratulations to this beautiful piece. Much better than the one(s) depicted in Cizmeli.
