Coin of the Day / Re: Forum purchase o' the day
« Last post by Tracy Aiello on April 21, 2024, 03:43:16 pm »
…and another great Forum Purchase O’ The Day: a splendid medal commemorating the centennial of the Battle of Trafalgar struck in copper from the HMS Victory.

I assume that the “E.R. VII” on the obverse stands for the reign of Edward the VII.

Fake Coins and Notorious Fake Sellers / Re: Tiberius Tribute Penny

In hand, the coin fabric seems ancient, the edges are OK...

But the reverse appears to have been severely cleaned/smoothed with quite a few scratches.

I actually purchased one of those from Joe years ago.  I've since sold it but here it is to compare:

Not saying this is the case, but sometimes, sellers will throw in a fake rare/expensive coin in a common authentic lot of coins.
Can you spot the fake in these lots:

Good information Joe. I was kinda puzzled with this one, looks cast (especially on the reverse), but the fabric of the coin (especially on the obverse) appears to be ancient.

Weights and Scales / Re: Bronze Weight Found In Israel Did Not Find In References

No idea, Joe.  You probably have seen this already, but Lionel Holland "Weights of Caesarea Maritima" lists both dirhams and dinars in multiples of 1,2 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 units; and divisions of 1/2, 1/3, 1/6, 1/12, 1/24 units.  So, nothing like this one in there.  He also has a square four nomismata marked N delta, #58, at 16.7 gm.  I will keep an eye out for anything else.

Rv.: Monogram cesarza w wieńcu laurowym. Napis w odcinku CON (oznaczenie mennicy w Konstantynopolu)
