Carthage Tannit Reference needed
« on: June 29, 2021, 11:37:50 am »
Dear friends!

Yesterday I got this coin from a friend:
Zeugitania, Carthage, c. 300-264 BC
AE 19, 5.38g, 19.34mm, 210°
struck in Sardinia(?)
obv.: Head of Tannit, wreathed with grain-ears, wearing necklace, l.
rev.:: Horse head r., sun symbol before  Pferdekopf n.r.
ref.: ???

I couldn't find this type with the sun symbol before the horse head. Anyone who does know this type or can give me a refernce?

Thanks in advance
Jochen

Do you know the meaning of the abbreviation MAA?

From CNG bibliography: MAA   J. Alexandropoulos. Les Monnaies de l’Afrique Antique. Toulouse. 2000.

I don't have access to SNG Cop to check this reference, but MAA is available online (but not downloadable  :-\)

The page with the description of number 57 is here: https://books.openedition.org/pumi/11316#tocfrom1n3 (somewhere in the middle of the page)

The descriptions of the different variants are a bit meager and most of them are not pictured. None of the descriptions seem to be an exact match in my eyes, but c is probably the closest.

Regards

Altamura

I have SNG Cop, and #144 - 147 have similar field mark. On 146 best visible.
